English as a mother tongue

Do you judge others as less than or not worthy of joining in on a thread if English is not their mother tongue. If you don't quite get the gist of their post, do you think it's them rather than you who is at fault?

Nah.

However, if they get agitated and rude at not being understood, then they're to blame for their own frustration.

Nope, I think fair play because I'm sure I can't write a decent paragraph in their native tongue. Unless it's Greek, then I'd have a good go. Our language is difficult anyway.

I think those with English as a second or additional language are often easier to understand than those with English as a first language who don't use any punctuation and/or use text speak.

To be fair there's no reason at all now days why everybody can't join in a thread no matter how good their English is what with all the translators and spell checks around now days

There are plenty of people whose mother tongue is English who write incoherent gibberish;

And plenty of non English who write perfectly.

Nah that's silly, of you move to another country its upto you to learn their language, why would I need to learn the language of a country im never going to associate with?

That's not to say it's ok to take the piss because it's not but why would somebody need to learn the other persons language in their own country

Given the number of Fabbers whose mother tongue IS English and still can't spell or assemble a coherent sentence, judging those for whom it's a second language is ridiculous.

Not in the slightest .

It's the way some posts get taken way off the original topic that sometimes gets to me , and that can happen no matter what ones native tongue may be .

Having English as a second language do affect my contribution into any thread in the forum as I don't sometimes understand the humour and worried that I might respond in wrong way.

But there is no reason for anyone to feel like they're 2nd class citizen just because english is not their main language.

I toured Europe back in the early 90s with a bunch of singers, the only place we had a language problem was Italy, everywhere else we met people who spoke English very well and had no problem communicating.

I'd hate to have to learn English from scratch so I have a great admiration for those who do!

My mother tongue is not English but spoke English from the age of 6. I learned very quickly how to look after myself as other kids liked to make trouble for myself and the Polish kid. He was bullied. I didn't let them.

Anyway the result is that I probably speak (and spell) better English than those who do have it as their mother tongue.

I am just taking from personal experience. I have had to grow up juggling two cultures i tend to think i can adjust into either quite easily. So if i meet someone from another culture i tend to indentify whats important to them.

Simply put that has not been reciprocated in relationships i have been in - its has had inclination to be one way

I don't think its your or their fault.

English is my second language, however I find it easier to communicate in it than in my mother tongue.

Someone on the post mentioned that English is a difficult language. I do have to strongly disagree with that statement because I find my mother tongue as well as French a lot more difficult, especially grammar.

But that is a good thing, I think English is a great language.

I started the thread because I was truly flummoxed because it came totally out of left field. I couldn't see how you came to that .... you were implying I can't write or think coherently in English. Can you actually respond to a thread or a post without being rude and offensive to the poster? It's plain rude. You can be pissed off, but that doesn't allow you to be rude and not be called on it, by the person you attempted to insult. Nor does it allow you to attempt to ridicule someone or insult them personally. I don't think so, anyway. It's shocking behaviour ... and I am sure most people on here couldn't give a rats arse to read the thread and see how you come across. I would think they have better things to do.

I can see they don't now ... at least those who have posted on here don't

Because what you were saying was such incoherent nonsense I actually wondered if the real reason for it was that you couldn't express yourself as you wanted to. As it turns out you are just too stubborn to admit when you are clearly wrong.

To imply that I look down on people speak English as a second language is as idiotic as the stuff you churned out on the other thread, Mrs Mixed speaks English as a second language ffs.

Gosh the rudeness has migrated from the other thread. Just because you couldn't understand what you read as 'incoherent nonsense' says more about you than it does about me. As does your response here. I expressed exactly what I wanted to ... if I am wrong I will admit it. On this occasion I believe I was right. I also believe your post attempted to belittle and undermine me .... if it didn't imply I was speaking English as a second language it was an attempt to imply I must bow to your intellectual superiority .... nice try.

You can think what you like, the thread is there for anyone to read and make their own mind up. I have no idea why you needed to create a whole thread about it. You said that you can't understand why anyone would say this and now I've explained why. But when you try and imply that I must have some kind of prejudice against people speaking a second language then yes that's going to piss me off.

OK, you think I'm bring rude, I think you were being rude on that thread. Doesn't make for a fascinating thread so we'll end it there.

"Suggesting I have English as a second language either implying I am a second class citizen or a passive aggressive dig at my command of the English language then?

I've just re read the thread and I can't see anywhere where anybody has implied English is your second language or have had a dig at your command of the English language

Who are you talking to and what did I miss

I mean if someone does this, why would they? I can't understand why someone would. It was not on this thread. I was trying to get my head around the reasons why someone would do this ... being the leftie I am, I just wondered if dislike or look down on those who don't have English as their mother tongue. I can see they don't now ... at least those who have posted on here don't

No. I'm not fluent in most languages so don't expect others to be.

I contribute of I think I understand and would try to help someone if they didn't grasp something.

We're an international site, we're fortunate as English speakers that everything is in English.

I work in Copenhagen in a multinational company. Where English is spoken as the official language during business hours.

It's amazing where my colleagues that have English as a secondary language speak near perfect Queens English.

Something wrong with our educational system

"There are plenty of people whose mother tongue is English who write incoherent gibberish;

And plenty of non English who write perfectly."

Indeed!

My other half is Dutch, English is his sixth language. I met him after he made a funny comment about my profile and smiling at his. His use of language and humour attracted me.

It was a refreshing change from the text speak incoherent nonsense I used to get from those with English as their mother tongue!

"Given the number of Fabbers whose mother tongue IS English and still can't spell or assemble a coherent sentence, judging those for whom it's a second language is ridiculous."

Aah, but they're "dyslexic"!

Must admit to scratching my head and wondering the same thing.

Something is going wrong, but I doubt it's entirely the fault of the education system.
