As with each of these disasters that occur, we as a species learn from it to improve our technology for the future. It doesn't prevent another catastrophe somewhere else, of course, but I'd bet my last pound that Japanese structural engineers have already started planning how to make future nuclear power plants impervious to earthquakes. We're fortunate over here though as we don't have earthquakes, well nothing big enough to even cause a slight flutter in the trees anyway.

" It wasn't the earthquake which caused the problem - it was the tsunami. We saw the damage the Boxing Day tsunami did, many thousands of miles away from the source, back in 2004. I happen to believe nuclear power is incredibly safe but that won't stop the scaremongers calling for an end to nuclear power generation in the UK and both Hunterston B and Torness are due to be replaced soon.

Well, technically yes, it was the tsunami, but the earthquake caused the tsunami, and those two things are highly unlikely to ever happen to the UK. I'd say our biggest threat would be from a hurricane like the one we had in '87 or worse.
