Question for Car Mechanics on here..

Looking to replace front discs on a micra. The old ones have more rust and a smaller width of shine track from the pads on the inside surface than the outer. Could the sliding caliper cylinders be sticking? If i take the pads out? Should the caliper slide easy?

Sounds like the caliper piston seals are sticking. They won't move in and out easily unless under hydraulic pressure. You can replace the piston seals and cylinders but on a micra I'd be inclined to replace the caliper if in doubt. If the discs are scored/ unevenly worn replace them too or you will get through brake pads v quickly

ah.. Right.. I would hate to replace discs and pads only for then to rust up through fauly calipers

The discs will rust up anyway if the car is unused for any time, that will disappear as soon as you touch the brakes the next time the car is used. No need to worry.

Sticking Pistons in the calipers is the problem you don't want

you can tell by looking at the old pads if one side is stuck it will be less worn

if your discs have gone thin then the calipers can travel too far and stick ..... so it may not be necessary to change the calipers just yet

should read.... "if your discs have worn thin and the pads are well worn then the pistons can travel too far and get stuck .... so it may not be necessary to change the calipers just yet"

If you suspect a seized calliper, when you brake it will normally pull to one side

If you think you've got caliper issues then change them. They are exchange parts so make sure you either take them with you or keep the receipt so you get the surcharge back
