"Controversial I know but not necessarily the greatest boxer of all time, however certainly the greatest sporting icon, the greatest representative of his people, the greatest entertainer in his sport and he showed the world how to act with the greatest dignity during his lifetime. Simply unforgettable." Controversial no, incorrect yes. His style changed boxing, his personality changed the world!

"He lost his last fight " "father time" remains undefeated...... there were 4 superstar heavyweights at that time.... Ali, Foreman, Frazier and Norton.... any fight with any 2 of those 4 was a blockbuster...... the rumble in the jungle was probably most famous... but ali-frazier 3 "the Thriller in Manilla" was probably from a boxing standpoint the most vicious heavyweight title fight.... neither boxer was the same after..... you could say the 3 ali-frazier fights... "the fight of the century" "superfight 2" and "the thriller in manilla" was the greatest trilogy of fights... if anyone else called themself "the greatest" we would all think they were a cocky S.O.B.... with him, we actually believed him..... I will go back and watch "when we were kings" at some point....and admire..

"Other fights that get overlooked: The three round demolition of Williams, and decisions over Chuvalo (tough as old rope) and Shavers (perhaps the hardest puncher he faced)." Yes, and of course the Liston fight. Clay (as he was called then) was a 22 year old 7-1 outsider who was expected to be eaten alive by the beast Liston. That was the fight that changed everything, including his name.

"Are either of the Liston fights overlooked? Wouldn't say so." I suppose overlooked would be a bit strong but they still get overshadowed by the Foreman and Frazier fights. Not many people these days realise how fearsome Liston was.

"Brian London. London was famously knocked out by Ali in 1966 when he took 11 punches in 3 seconds. I once asked him how it felt to be hit 11 times by by Ali and he replied "I haven't a clue, I only felt the first one"" London was asked what he could have done better in his fight with Ali, straight away he replied "I should have shot him"

Also when you add the names of Patterson , Moore , Folley , Quarry , Norton , Lyle , Shavers you realise it was the strength of opposition that sets him apart and that's to name a few !

In those days the best fought the best and regularly. In modern boxing there are far too many no hopers chucked at champions for nothing more than a pay day. Don't get me wrong, there are still some good fighters who come up against well matched opposition. But those fights seem fewer and further between. Or am I just looking at the past through rose coloured glasses? Tell me what you like though. There will never be another like the "Thriller in Manilla.

"Smokin' Joe's been waitin five years for another crack at The Greatest...there'll be a rumble of thunder in the sky tonight!..." Frazier hated Ali for his jibes about him before their first fight. Not sure he really ever forgave him for some of the stuff he came out with about him.
