What a shit year this is for losing people.

When I was (much) younger I used to go into the 007 club in Blackpool and would sometimes talk to the owner Brian London.

London was famously knocked out by Ali in 1966 when he took 11 punches in 3 seconds.

I once asked him how it felt to be hit 11 times by by Ali and he replied "I haven't a clue, I only felt the first one"

Many tributes will be paid to the great man but his own words speak much louder.

'If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it, then I can achieve it.'

'Live every day like it’s your last because someday you’re going to be right.'

'I told you I was the greatest'

Yes he was right.

As kids in the 60s 70s he was the world to us.

Still remember the excitement around school before and after his fights or even just seeing him on tv. Never be anyone like that again. The best. Sad day

In my ManDen I have a wall of boxing pictures. The centre piece is the iconic picture of him standing over Liston.

Ali was an idol to me. He graced a sport I love and transcended that to be one of the most important social and cultural spokesman of the 20th century.

I used to Chair a business breakfast meeting. It was traditional to have a Thought of the Day at the end of each one. I always used an Ali quote. He was such an inspiration.

there were 4 superstar heavyweights at that time.... Ali, Foreman, Frazier and Norton....

any fight with any 2 of those 4 was a blockbuster......

the rumble in the jungle was probably most famous... but ali-frazier 3 "the Thriller in Manilla" was probably from a boxing standpoint the most vicious heavyweight title fight.... neither boxer was the same after.....

you could say the 3 ali-frazier fights... "the fight of the century" "superfight 2" and "the thriller in manilla" was the greatest trilogy of fights...

if anyone else called themself "the greatest" we would all think they were a cocky S.O.B.... with him, we actually believed him.....

I will go back and watch "when we were kings" at some point....and admire..

Yes, and of course the Liston fight.

Clay (as he was called then) was a 22 year old 7-1 outsider who was expected to be eaten alive by the beast Liston.

That was the fight that changed everything, including his name.

I was watching a tribute to him this morning on TV, not being a fan of boxing I didn't really follow him or know much about him, to me he was just a boxer

After watching this tribute I realise I just how wrong I was, he did so much for equal rights of black people in America, never gave up that fight and made sure everybody against him because of his colour knew he was here to stay, truely remarkable man and I don't say that often

Broke my heart this morning when I woke to the news he had gone

As an ex boxer myself Ican fully appreciate his art and what his legacy has done for the sport

That aside his tireless work as an ambassador to the African Continent and his diplomacy when helping the US speak to Islamic nations is sometimes forgotten when summing up his great life

Absolutely. In those days the best fought the best and regularly. In modern boxing there are far too many no hopers chucked at champions for nothing more than a pay day.

Don't get me wrong, there are still some good fighters who come up against well matched opposition. But those fights seem fewer and further between. Or am I just looking at the past through rose coloured glasses?

Tell me what you like though. There will never be another like the "Thriller in Manilla.

Frazier hated Ali for his jibes about him before their first fight. Not sure he really ever forgave him for some of the stuff he came out with about him.
