They're really important to me. Don't need to be grand or sweeping, but any appreciation for the things you do/try to do, counts.

A world of my own

I take the majority of the compliments on here with a big pinch of salt. However when I give them I mean them.

In real life it's always lovely to recieve a compliment. It's still not easy for me to just accept them though.

I always remember a time when I was running a retail business which was obviously turnover driven . The business owner would see me every month and we would go over the figures , and as the business grew he would tell me how well I was doing which was a major factor in driving me .

Anyway after a few years he went away , missed a monthly meeting and when he saw me for the next one he was a bit stand offish despite a major upturn in figures . I felt totally deflated so rang him a week later and asked him why he hadn't mentioned it . He told me that one day he may not be around to compliment me on my performance , and it was time for me to be self motivated . I was 25 at the time and didn't full get it , but here I am now 30 years later running my own successful business . Best thing that ever happened to me !

But on a superficial level , a well meant compliment is nice to give and receive .

I like to think that I don't need them but there's probably a deep human need for them at some level. No man is an island. We're social creatures and lack of human social nourishment when young leads to potential disorders.

I give them and also like to say what my deep feelings are, rather than something that leaves others guessing or wondering what the ulterior motive really is.

Always a pleasure to receive. Like fab 'straight' there are also fab 'compliments', with their own meanings.

This. I don't tend to compliment guys because they seem to lose interest when I do. No clue why?

And I don't tend to believe compliments if they are given to me. But a part of me lies to myself and pretends it's true on here, cos let's face it, you don't get many compliments in the real world.

Compliments from Marc are important to me, yes. If he stopped complimenting me I think my self-esteem would diminish a bit.

When people other than Marc compliment me, it's nice but I wouldn't say it's "important" to me. On fab it's a completely different story because compliments are usually complete bull shit.

I don't like people who can't take a compliment, though. It can get annoying when I genuinely compliment someone and they feel like they just have to disagree with me. I was reading a book on Englishness that said this is a common trait of English people. It's drives me crazy.

Cough....... I can help you there Courtney. It is true. If you say to an English woman. ' I love your dress!' they will reply .... 'Oh ..this old thing. Had it years. Bought it for buttons in Primark. Worn to death now.... uhmmm ermmmm thanks. You can have it if you want. .......

That's cos... English people were brought up to consider it CRASS to make personal remarks about others and therefore never learned how to behave socially when someone does.... other than wanting to punch their lights out that is.. or run.

Not important for me. I spent 30 years with a man who only once said I looked nice and once said he thought I had beautiful eyes. That was when he realised I was going to leave. Compliments don't make me feel better about myself,I don't care what others think of me.

I love compliments, i love being complimented on things that are not obvious. I love getting compliments with no alterior motive. My favourites are from people who you know are not free with.

The ridiculous over the top compliments on here make me smile, smile at the fact they really think im going to go for that shit.

Im free with my compliments cause when i pay a compliment im just telling the truth

I hate it. It makes me feel like they want to be convinced that my compliment is true. If I say "oh your dress is nice," and a woman responds with "No, its just your average dress," what the hell am I supposed to say back? "Actually, yeah you're right, it's just an average dress, never mind"??? Meh. A simple "thanks" never killed anyone.

To this day I still haven't found a way to deal with "Pleased to meet you" I just panic.

Self-deprecation is fine up to a point, the problem comes when, as a nation, it becomes "Tall poppy syndrome" and we start trying to pull down anyone who achieves a modicum of success

Unexpected compliments are nice - I like it when a total stranger compliments my dancing or my riding. And compliments from the ones you love are important too. I don't often give them - so they are worth a lot when I do, though I regularly affirm in other ways.

I get embarrassed if complimented as I'm not used to it. I get lots of comments from strangers about my height, often quite bitchy and unpleasant, so it's always nice to receive a genuine compliment from folk.
