folkestone

I was walking past a payphone kiosk and it was of course ripped out, and i got me wondering if anyone uses them anymore with the widespread use of mobile phones

I had to use one last year when both of my phones failed (think there was a phone jam thing in place).

A lot are being repurposed. Some have CPR stuff. Some of the red ones are rented out for businesses, I saw one in Hampstead that was a cafe. Some are wifi hotspots.

Everyone still uses pay phones - these days you pay for it monthly and it's called a smartphone.

In the event of a civil emergency where the phone and mobile networks are turned off the only network that will work are the phone box networks

Central

"In the event of a civil emergency where the phone and mobile networks are turned off the only network that will work are the phone box networks "

Connected to the same phone exchanges as home and business phone lines? And they use the same long distance networks surely - albeit their class of service would be for a payphone line?

Yes still use them as using a cell phone here can be well patchy. Often no signal.

derby

The local vandals used to take quite a delight in wrecking the outdoor pay phones we had on a regular basis, the modern successors to these seem to survive until the next load of Idiots come along, the old ones in the red boxes were always targets for the cretins we had then.
