Making new friends

Some advice would be welcome; how do you make new friends as an adult?! Ive been in my current town for 4 years and still don't feel like I have a close network of friends. All my old and close friends are scattered around the uk and I've started to feel really down about it.

I've joined a sports team, tried befriending fellow mum's but it feels really forced. I've yet to meet anyone I feel like I can be myself with and enjoy a good night out with...

Has anyone experienced similar? Any advice on good ways to make new chums?

Try Meet-up. It's a website with lots of different groups in different parts of the country for various hobbies.

This is what I was going to suggest. There's lots on there and I've met a guy who turned out to be on here and we have a great time as mates

i think youre looking for the same level of friendship you had before you moved but this takes time - you are out and about and meeting people which is good

Lancashire

When I first moved to lancs I just joined loads of groups for things I was already interested in. At first it felt forced but eventually you get to know a few people better.

I can appreciate where you're coming from though, never quite the same as friends you grow up with but I guess that's life we all move away and have families and jobs that get in the way.

I have made friends through voluntary work I have been doing.

South East Midlands NOT

I've just moved into my area too, all my long term friends are 60+ miles away. I've joined meetup but all the activities seem to be on nights I can't do!

That said, i've met some great girls on here, i'm hoping friendships will blossom. x

I experienced this when I moved away from a city where I grew up into a little village in the country.

I moved here 9 years ago and still don't really know anyone. I say hi to the neighbours and the odd chat about the weather etc and that's about it.

Was weird going from having busy soctal life to having next to none.

But tbh I've got used to it now and couldn't think of anything worse than going back to my busy old life.

I quite like the quiet life now. Nice Walks in the countryside which is on my doorstep.

Thong is to keep yourself occupied if you can then you won't feel like you have cabin fever and not too lonely .

Youll be fine

Ooh I'll looo into meet up thanks. Time is a bit of an issue with three young children but maybe I should try and squeeze in another activity? thinkibg of joining local women's equality party or something as I'm interested in politics.

I must admit it's knocked my confidence big style, I'm very friendly by nature and never seem to be invited anywhere by people I'm acquainted with. Start to worry I've got a terrible personality or something!

I moved around a lot as I left home at 16, and had to go wherever I was working.

I find just going out and doing stuff with people I know led to me meeting other social circles. For example, the pub with colleague meant I was introduced to my colleague's friends and other people who were in the pub. Or events like conferences meant I met people in the same industry who were up for a chat and drink occasionally.

There's websites for socialising like MeetUp where you can join social groups and go to socials related to that interest.

You just have to be talkative, friendly and open to new people.

Someone asked for similar advice for her friend last week.

I've done volunteering all of my adult life and find it great to do something that helps others and get to meet many lovely people. Otherwise pursue your interests, finding groups that love the same.

Does the school do any courses you could attend, or have a pta? I went on a course at the school and it helped me get to know a few mums, it takes time but talk to them daily then maybe suggest a trip to the park or something

It's really hard. Esp if you're not outgoing and don't enjoy 'putting yourself out there' (assumptions here and apologies if they're wrong)

I've been in my teeny market town 13 years and still don't really have any friends here. They're more further afield.
