Work time aside... how much of your free time do you spend cyber-socialising?

What is the ratio? Real life socialising to cyber socialising?

Of the people you consider to be real friends, what is the ratio of people you have regular real life contact with and those formed and maintained in cyber space?

Has the internet become an alternative/substitute to real life contact with humans, rather than an additional means of social contact?

I should get out more!

I'm becoming more of a hermit the older I get. My friends are 70/30 maybe... I have way more real life friends than internet friends who realistically, I can probably count on two hands.

Hardly a friend in cyber world as in face to face ...

Nearly all our friends come via the dancing and biking worlds along with some community groups ...we know alot of different and diverse peeps ..

Cyber world is just that ..virtual ...it keeps me amused at present ...

Its about half and half if im bieng honest.

Sometimes i cant get out and it becomes a life saver and i have met and am still mates with some lovely peeps off the net.

It certainly widened by circle and also im not one for going "round the town" drinking etc.

Its a young persons world now and i always feel ancient if popping to the pub.

Besides...i likes the socials when i manage to get to them.

I have a family and budget to consider, both restrict the amount of time I go out and about. Hence I enjoy the larger socials and get-together's.

I'm a bit of an insomniac so feel it's nice to chat to a 'virtual' friend either here on this site or my family on msn. Plus I like doing my online shopping in my jim-jams lol xx

spend pretty much every night on here/ facebook...

not like i can leave my bambino to head out down the pub while she sleeps

during the day though its at mother toddler groups, shopping, visiting family, soft play centres etc

There's no one in any forum, networking site etc that I "socialise" with more than my friends and family.

I "chat" to people on these sites but I don't class them as friends. I don't seek their approval, I don't look them up, I don't need or want validating by anyone.

It's fun, escapism at times, when I know I should be doing something more productive...but don't want to!

I understand what your saying but you must have people who you 'click' or 'gel' with that use these forums/chat more than others. That you find you have similar/shared opinions and values regarding various topics

Us two met online some 11 years ago in the old MSN vanilla chat rooms and as we lived 150 miles apart I think its safe to say we would never have met if not for the Internet.

When the Internet is referred to as 'Cyber' it makes it seem unreal made worse by referring to the conventional alternative as 'the real world'.

So with respect to the OP's question I don't see it as 'cyber' or 'real'... its all real, just a different platform. We have friends, some we might have met in a pub/club/party, some we might have met on an Internet forum/chatroom/swingers site etc.

At any given point in time we have a small few 'cyber' friends but only because we haven't met them YET.

I met my ex in the old yahoo chatrooms 10 years ago or so...I was in Canada and he was here in the Uk...no we are no longer together but I have 3 beautiful children to show for my online socialising that progressed into meeting... I have friends all over the world so online is the easiest way to communicate with them all, and yes I do have friends that I met through online sites, but it is both "cyber and real". Like cutensassy once the kids are in bed I don't really have a choice but to be in so the forums and msn are a great way to pass the time.But I do have friends in my everyday life too that I see...

Most of my socialising is in the real face to face world. Forums, chats and online socialising ought to be an addition.

I think if you only communicate with someone online, they are not likely to be your friends.The internet, used as another way of keeping in contact with friends has to be a plus.

I think I would be concerned if I was choosing to stay in and surf, in preference to going out to meet with friends and family.

its a mix of both go out with family and friends but do chat to some friends and family via fb and msn, as half my family is in england and cant visit as often as i wud like, and must say we have made some wonderful new friends on here as well that we socialise with.

i spend more time with fam and friends but do log on at night as have people all over the place i talk to on msn .....so this is just a past time for me but have met some lovely people i class as friends ....no gd being on if u say there not friends whats the point cming on then !!!

Thats the thing I have the real world but not a lot of free time so spend my evenings on here having a real giggle. I have got to that age where most of my friends are married or settled with partner and children and I still want to play. This is one of the reasons I got into swinging. And have met some amazing great friends through fabs, socials and clubs etc

Well in the week if im on my own I come online as I dont really watch TV very much. But I do meet friends out of work and go out with my girlfriends and then of course my swinging nights out. I was out last night and tonight, the previous week I was only out on Monday night and the week before that I was out Tuesday and Friday. The times I do go out, I am rarely home before 2am, so I guess Im out a fair bit. Now im old it takes me longer to recover from it

well i do very little texting and that is even though i have my mobile number on my profile lol.

I don't do twitter or tumblr or facebook etc

This site is the only cyber stuff i do and thats not everyday.

Yes, there are some interesting and funny people on the forums I contribute too, but they're not my friends and I don't live for validation, or need them to massage my ego etc.

If I'm having a bad day I don't log onto the internet for strangers to make me feel better I call, visit a friend, ring my sister Angie in Italy.

She's off to Brazil for three months next month, she's adopting a child - I don't know how I'm going to manage!
