In the past I have been a very heavy traveller taking up to two cases (and not using half of my stuff). Looking at the prices of going away in the summer they are asking £82 return for 1 normal hold bag.

Is it actually possible to travel hand luggage only ,and not find you need lots of things while you're there?

In my personal situation on this occasion as I need to be 1 adult and 1 child.

I go away for a week to visit my partner every month and never use my hold allowance, just hand luggage each time. I do fly BA though so I do get a handbag too.

I don't remember the last time I checked luggage.

PS the last time I travelled it was £40 return for one case and this time it is £82. That was a surprise too!

I wonder if possibly it's cheaper to book everything through the agency, and then just book directly an extra bag with the airline. It might be cheaper...

It's usually cheaper to book extra bags at the point of sale, when booking with the airline.

If you know you only use half of the stuff, why are you paying extra to bring it?

I hope so, we are doing that for the first time in October, but as a family of 5 we still get 50 kilos of hand luggage to take. Only going for 4 days, not sure we could do a fortnight

It does depend on where you are going, and what you will need when you are there. I have managed 3 weeks in Europe with a the clothes I wore to ride n the day, wash kit. and a pair of shorts to wear in the beach bar for the hour it took to dry them each night.

Also, buy toiletries when you get there and dont bring them back... they take up space and weight, plus liquids are banned anyway.

Most airports have Boots with deals like 3 for 2 on miniatures anyway. Rarely cost much more than the high street for that type of thing.

I felt that I would need it but once I was got back found I didn't wear or use half of it.

I do think that I'm going to give it a go...hand luggage only... Worse way,what I save by not taking a case I can buy if necessary..( but leave there...

If it's BA, your handbag can be quite large so use the space there too.

Another tip for beach type holidays, Primary etc. clothes are cheaper than luggage space, leave them behind and you have space to bring holiday purchases back.

I bought Ryan air hand luggage sized pulley bag and was allowed 10kg. I am off again in 2 weeks for a weeks holiday using same bag. Bought toiletries out there (Canaries) and left them there. Cheaper than £80 they wanted for 15kg hold luggage! (Bag cost £8.99)

I almost never check baggage, even for international flights including trips back to NY. I prefer having everything on hand. And I don't really know what I'd even take with me to fill a checked bag.

Checking luggage is useful if you have a long layover though, as you can go into whatever city you're in and explore without carting baggage around.

Definitely possible to go hand luggage only.

Just pack smart and its also so much easier and faster travelling and checking in without luggage. So much faster. And you can but cheap toiletries there.

I couldnt use just hand baggage as im very fussy about what toiletries i use and when abroad i have never seen the ones i use.

We have never had to pay much to take a suitcase though.

Yeah, my partner used to travel for work. He would be away a week or two every month. He would quite happily travel with only hand luggage, anywhere in the world.

I did it to Dublin a couple of years ago as well, when I was coxing a rowing squad. I put all of my kit in a single bag - including my safety gear - and a friend of mine packed a waterproof coat for me.

Make sure you wear all your bulkiest garments that you want to take for the flight.

Regards toiletries... I take five things with me. A small toothpaste, a toothbrush, a shampoo bar from Lush, a small chunk of soap from Lush, and a pot of 'charity pot' from Lush. Takes up almost no space at all, especially if you ask them if you can have an empty mini sample pot to decant the big pot of moisturiser into.

Check the airline cabin baggage policy well in advance.

All airlines vary.

For example, on a Thomson short haul flight, the cabin luggage weight limit is 5 kilos.

Best checking so you don't get caught out at the airport with hefty fees.

I can't manage a weeks holiday with just hand luggage. I'm currently working abroad and the only reason I travel to and fro with just hand luggage is because I have clothes at home and the apartment where I work

That is if you don't have a hand bag as well as hand luggage, this will class you as having 2 items of luggage, also it might get you a £45 charge if you travel easyjet.

I will add that if you are traveling on easyjet make sure you are in the first 60 people going through the boarding gate desks, as the boarding agents are told to count 65 trolley cases, before they have to take the cases off you and put them in the hold.

Wash 'n wear. Buy some clothes hand washing soap/liquid on the other side. One only uses 1/3 of what one packs.

I've traveled hang luggage only, even when traveling for a few months. Laundering is easy and warm weather dictates less to be worn. I buy some stuff if needed and can judge very well what I will wear, before packing.

I've been stopped at airports when they assume I've forgotten to pick up my real bags.

Good clothes folding also maximises space.

Of course the real way to travel in the modern era, is to order new clothes and toiletries online to be delivered to your hotel on your arrival date, carry nothing but you iPad and credit card.
