Take a decent photo, I line it up right, smile, it looks ok, I press the shutter and in that instant clearly I'm doing something wrong

Why not take a few if you can with a burst mode function on your camera? Move about subtly between each shot to capture you at your best.

Take a video ..then take screen shots from this which give you more choices .

I'm exactly the same op...my face pics never ever look like i do in the mirror. I just don't get it....i blame gremlins

Yes, in your first photo, you have a nice smile but your ear has fallen off.

It's not just you, I never like face pics of myself.

I end up pulling weird faces or looking lopsided. Maybe I'm just in denial and it's how I really look.

I think you look nice in the picture, but that probably won't change your opinion of it.

I don't look how I think I look in some face pics. I have a droopy eye sometimes after a car accident injury and that seems to be exaggerated in some close up pictures.

Me too, face pic selfies always look weird cos it's not a natural photo, it's you smiling or doing whatever and taking a picture of yourself. It's like my face knows this isn't right and I end up looking awkward!
