"An application to carry out fracking in England for the first time since a ban was lifted in 2012 has been approved. North Yorkshire County Council considered a bid by Third Energy to extract shale gas at a site near Kirby Misperton in Ryedale. It was banned before because of 2 minor earthquakes near Blackpool. I've read lots of negatives about the environmental impact of it. As usual Westminster want it but they're not living by it. " We have been Fracking in the North Sea for past 30/40 years Biggest problem I can see on-land is water contamination for those who use bore holes as home water supply the contamination would be brine. Guess it depends on existing well pressure and if any fluids are required to be injected to push through the gas again depending on the permeability and porosity of the rock Strange how Scotland can give an outright ban on fracking yet Westminster says its okay in England

And our government are greedy. I'm never surprised if there are back handers involved in getting this through. I'm a cynic though.

" Back Handers are not required, the huge tax revenue is all that is required from the government, that is why many oil companies in the North sea are calling it a day now, not due to low reserves but due to the huge tax implementation's

"What exactly is fracking? And why is it so bad? " . Hydraulic fracturing otherwise known as fracking is a process of releasing fossil fuel(gas or oil) that is effectively trapped inside rock formations(usually shale). Fracturing has been used for decades, the new technology bit is actually the drilling, they can now drill down and then along sideways for miles, this allows you a greater scope of land for the drilling platform to cover. . . Why is it so bad?... Usually from piss poor practise by the companies, where profit nearly always comes before any worry about contamination. See when they fracture the rock to release the fuel, they use various chemicals designed to keep the fracture open with as little friction as possible, these chemical ingredients are always secret but from internal leaked documents we can see there very seriously hazardous to health, which is important because many times the drill will go through water courses under the ground and this means water contamination and pretty much once it's contaminated it's there for hundreds of years. The earthquake problem is separate but basically the high pressure fracturing causes these, it's not the size of the quake but the volume of them, often you can get hundreds of these mini quakes from one single drill. The process of fracking is intensive in every aspect requiring large volumes of water, trucks, machinery and noise.

"the chemical mostly used to improve permeability is polymer, this allows easier flow of hydrocarbons & gas through porous rock, Polymer is normally mixed with sea water and suspect it will be the same on land unless they have plenty supply of fresh water they want to throw away Havent heard of any "secret" chemicals, ??? Biocides are injected into wells to kill all bugs and prevent topside contamination, oxy scav is also used to remove all oxygen from the water prior to injection the only other is scale inhibitor to protect subsea/subland pipelines as well as topside pipelines on return flow" They are chemicals ...secret or not...that may end up in the water supply. We simply dont know enough about the long term effects of fracking. .....and its its still a fossil fuel. Fracking is so short term. We need long term solutions not sticking plaster responses to help keep the price of fuel down.

Common sense says that adding chemicals isnt a good idea. Climate change does seem to be occuring. Burning more fossil fuel will exacerbate this. Fracking has more to do with politics and keeping the price of fuel down. High fuel prices lead to unrest and an end to political careers and goverments. We need long medium and long term vision and investment in alternative sources of energy. A small amount of people will make a lot of money from fracking. A large number of people may end up with a polluted water supply.

I think there will be a few Ryedale councillors finding theirs have ended soon
