I always fancied myself as a Jonathon Hart, zipping down sunny coastal highways in a classic open top Merc, sexy red headed lady by my side, cute dog in the back.

Alas, life had other plans for me

I am a middle aged slaphead who burns like a chip pan fire, the sexy lady is another bloke and the cute dog is a mutt from the local dogs home.

A 12 year old (non convertible) Saab doesn't have quite the same allure as the Merc and my drive to work is more industrial wasteland than coastal highway.

So, thanks for drawing attention to that

I've got a soft top I use in the summer and if it's really hot with the air conditioning on and also on some cool days with the top down and the heater on. Use a saloon in the winter.

Years ago I had a Dutton Melos. It had a hard top that was removable (pain in the ass) then there was a soft top too that just clipped on. Loved it (even though it cost me a bloody fortune to get on the road).

Terrible in hot climates , when the roof is down everything gets full of dust and you get sunburnt whilst driving without knowing it. You only see Expat muppets driving them never the locals so that says something

London and France

I have lived most of my life in hot sunny climates;

Where few people have convertibles;

A car with a roof and A/C is much more comfortable and practical; the convertibles are used by the tourists, mainly.

Anyway, if I want fresh air, I use the motorbike .

I've had several rag tops and hard top convertibles over the last 10 yrs, including a C70, focus, MX5 and now a Boxster, I have the top down as often as I can and love the wind in my hair while driving. A hangover from my biking days probably. The only 2 down points to them is the constant " is it a mid life crisis?" Questions and every BMW and Audi driver thinking I'll race them.

I've owned a few in my time, from a MG Midgit (first car I ever owned), a Frog Eyed Sprite (first car I restored), a 1935 Matchless Super Sport Morgan (the most difficult restoration and hardest car to drive I have ever owned (manual ignition advance and throttle mounted on steering wheel)), to an Astra with a Grifith 500 (the most terrifying car I have ever owned) in the middle of the 90's and a Reliant Scimitar Convertable (the nicest car I have ever owned) in the mid 80's.

They were all winter and bad weather alternatives to my bikes and I got a lot of strange looks driving around with the top down in the winter and rain. LoL

Once owned a Astra gte soft top in winter, in Scotland! Awful thing! Roof fitted so badly the wind noise was unbearable on the motorway & thats with the top up!

Ended up driving everywhere with the top down(dry days) to give my eardrums a break. This usually resulted in near-hypothermia & various hand gestures from other motorists.

Quick car though!

Before buying get yourself some driving lessons! The IAM is a good place to start, and you will need a few lessons from from a racing school thrown in. I went to Brands Hatch in the 70's as it was the only school around but there are a few now. Go to the ARDS site and find the nearest to you and learn how to drive a powerful car with no driver aids before you buy or you will wrap it round something!

I've had open cars for over 20 years now, don't like little tin boxes. Only difference between then and now is that the older I get the more likely I am to leave the roof on if it's a bit chilly! Coldest roofless drive was -2c

Been caught in rain a few times -drive quicker and you stay dry... problem is traffic tends to slow down when the rain gets heavy!

Have you had a look at some of the other 'seven type' cars in the kit-car market? Caterhams are great ...so are Westfields... Worth a look at MEV too, there's loads to choose from.

"If your car is worth less than £10000 don't drive with the roof down its embarrassing "

Bullshit.

You can get a Porsche 911 targa easily for less than £10k

Buying one with over 100k miles and you'll probably get a bit of change if you're lucky, since the gearboxes are usually fucked by 100k miles. So buy one that's had the rebuild.

"I have a dream...

Caterham Se7en.

Either white with blue Ford racing stripes or Gulf livery (baby blue and orange).

No roof ever. Job done.

*Him*

Have you had a look at some of the other 'seven type' cars in the kit-car market? Caterhams are great ...so are Westfields... Worth a look at MEV too, there's loads to choose from. "

Westfields & Caterhams are both brilliant and lots of fun!

Glad it's not just me! I've never owned a car worth that much and none of them have cause me any embarrassment!

...other than a few weeks ago at a busy roundabout by a big pub, lost all power. three d*unk guys helped me get it out of the traffic.. took a while due to one of them being slightly confused by terms like 'forward' and 'backwards'

Essex.

"Soft top 90... The one true convertible...

Do you go all the way and drop the screen and remove door tops"

I remove the door tops occasionally but have an external cage round the screen...

When I get my S3 88 restored, door tops off and screen down like I did in the old days...

It's nothing to do with looking flash, it;'s about enjoying driving without being stuck in a tin box. Nothing I do is about 'looking flash' I grew out of that before I left junior school.

(p.s. 'You're'...basic English. )
