"There is no such thing as a cover version being better than the original, they may be as good but never better. "

Depends how you interpret " Cover Version"

If you mean just copying the original, then you are right ;

If you mean reinterpreting the original, then many are utterly brilliant and are light years above the originals .

Or sometimes they are just as good, but vastly different transformations.

Plus White Stripes Version of " Just don't know what do do with Myself":

Equal to , and is very different to Dusty's version ( which is classic). Dusty's version is itself a cover, as it was originally recorded by a guy called Tommy Hunt, and his version was dire.

"Johnny Cash cover of U2's One proves it is possible to polish a turd"

They also proved it on Mythbusters

Though to be fair, any cover of U2 song is better than the original.

I'm not the first person to say on this thread, but yes, Cashs version of Hurt effortlessly destroys NINs.

Aretha Franklin - Respect

Marvin Gaye - Heard it thru the grapevine

The Pouges - Dirty old Town....

"There is no such thing as a cover version being better than the original, they may be as good but never better.

Why not? "

Well my personal opinion is that cover versions are album fillers for bands with little ideas or not enough material and by doing a cover is only highlighting that the original artist created a piece of music that they can only imitate
