Sex Education for 5 year olds!

I've just read that explicit reading material has been cleared for children as young as five.

Personally I waited until my children asked a question and answered it truthfully, but age appropriately.

Although the material appears to be aimed at children as young as five, and it should be down to the parents' descretion, would any parent really try explaining what an orgasm, masturbation, erection is to a five year old or various sexual positions?

I certainly dont think i will be. I remember being brought a book about it all and read it on my own, didnt have to feel embarrassed about it. i was 11 or 12 i think.. best thing my parents done. Id have died of embarrassment if i had the sit down initial talk. I did ask questions after id read it, but knew by then that the pressure was off for me to start the subject as they bought me the book and explained i didnt have to read it until i felt ready too

oh no! My eldest 2 knew quite a lot from that sort of age, but that's because I was then pg with no 3, and they'd quite happily discuss sperm, eggs and the like (usually whilst in the queue somewhere like TEsco ) It was all still quite vague and general though. More basic mechanics, I guess.

Its gone beyond ridiculous Sassy. Its going to be taught in schools and has been brought about because they think it will lower the amount of teenage pregnancies. I do not think educating tots is going to solve that problem

I think this is firmly on the shoulders of parents to educate their fertile offspring about contraception and to be more interested in their lives instead of letting them go off having unprotected under aged sex. Its not a school problem its a parental one.

The article I saw had a picture of "mummy and daddy" kissing and cuddling in bed with the caption "daddy has an erection and puts it in mummy's vagina!"

I'm all for answering kids questions but it seemed a little "too much information" for me. Also, not every child is conceived on a bed of crushed rose petals with scented candles wafting in the background!

I couldn't agree more: it's something I'd want to raise with my children - I think they should concentrate more in getting children to write in English and not text speak instead of books showing mummy on a swing and daddy pumping her!

The space hopper one was just poetic license and an insight to the mind of the cartoonist who drew it - badly I might add.

perhaps my way of thinking is miles off the mark (nothing new there) but maybe because we are educated early in school it makes us all curious to experience these things.

I remember being 13 and having a sexual education day.. and for weeks after its all people were talking about it and some as a result of it decided to loose their virginity.. remember also being an outsider because i refused to conform when all my friends then told me 'they had done it' like it was something to be proud of...

My mum and dad did a bril job i think raising me and my brother and i knew from them my body at 13 wasnt physically ready for that kind of activity and the law said it was wrong.

I`d agree Cherche...and just seems tremendously sad we can`t let children be children any more s`well..times of innocence are getting shorter and shorter..that I find a tradegy..

See this is a classic example. Young people who have lived through early and more explicit sex education already are the ones who the government should be listening to - we were told absolutely nothing but the bare essentials and the stigma and danger of pregnancy and STI's it scared us shitless and although some did experiment it was few and far between. We were green as grass at 13. The government can just go form one extreme to the other in my eyes. How do they fail to see where the failings are?

i mean completely out of context now (sorry sassy) but would you teach a child of 10 all about driving a car and honestly expect none of them to attempt it now they know how it all works?

But returning back to the Sexual Education matter it was exceptionally graphic and i felt afterwards there was no mystery about it. I felt educated about it, but for that reason it was like a green pass to have intercourse. What would realistically happen if all sex education were to stop in schools.. i think children wouldnt really bat an eyelid. Its one of those things we all sniggered at but only highlighted the situation.. made it more aware that it was a taboo, which made it more appealing to teenagers who rebel against pretty much anything without a reason needing to be given

i honestly dont mind if my kids had sex ed now id rather them know from a young age and if they have any questions i dont mind answering them.we had it far too late when we were in school and dont think we had it often enough and in enough detail

Personally, at that age i would be beginning to teach them about self respect for themselves then lead into relationships of all kinds (friendships, boy girl ect) then slowly introduce things up intil around the age of 10/11.

The thought of a couple on a space-hopper......sick, it's primarily a toy associated with childhood and innocence.

So if five year olds read a book with pics like that in I feel it's sending mixed signals.

Or forcing too much detail onto children who are basically not interested in sex at very young ages.

A lot of us will have raised children to 5 years old - did any of them ever ask about sex at that age? My oldest was amazed at 5 that I had a baby in my tummy (her brother) but never asked how it got there - just couldnt wait for it to get out. Children ask what they want to know. I gave the usual seed story and it sufficed. My kids would have switched off if I went into any further detail. You just know when the time is right to go into it in more detail.

when my eldest daughter was starting secondary school we bought her a book that explained everything from going through puberty to sex, sti's ect and she read it at her own pace and if she didnt understand anything she then ask us, and was then passed onto younger daughter, it was the best thing i ever bought for them.

as for 5yr old getting sex ed its far to young...

if they are doing this to try and lower the age off teens having sex and getting preg i think its a waste of time, when these young kids grow up to there teens they will have sex just like if they are going to smoke, drink or joyride they cant be watched 24/4, but i do think that more community projects are needed to try and get teens off the streets to maybe try and lower the number of teens doing what they shouldnt be doing

My kids at 5 know mummy and daddy sometimes have special cuddles that if they are lucky get babys..

And babys grow in mummys tummy, and then the doctor helps get it out..

My 10 year old did sex education two years ago..and for me it spoiled his innocence.. but I couldnt not let him learn it.. because if I didnt he would get his friends relayed version.

I think it should not be taught till secondary school.. and as a parent I am always happy to answer my kids questions..

My oldest has always asked me things.. and he didnt have sex till 16... and is quite grown up about it all..( hope he doesnt read this on here lol )

My daughter 13 told me yesterday she had a boyfriend though and I got all protective. lol Mentioned about inappropriate behaviour and stuff.. I got told, mum we are not going to be touching anywhere that my Dad would cut his hands off.. and if he touches my boobs or bits, I will break his nose..

Made me smile though..

but sex education should be taught to parents not the kids.. I hated it at school..

totally agree ,i mean we should let kids be kids for as long as we can ,its a one shot deal once innocence and childhood has gone thats it ,,,and whats the rush anyway ?

Reminds me of when I too was pregnant with my second child, my daughter used to speak to her 'baby' in her tummy... her daddy asked her how will the baby come out, through your tummy-button?... she replied silly daddy, babies come out of your front botty!

She also breastfed her dollies up her jumper when I was nursing her brother.

My children learned through association with family and friends talking about and explaining pregnancy and babies and observing. Experience passed on, when asked a question - an honest succinct answer given.

Thats the only way in my book. Those in my peer group who had embarrassed parents still eventually learned about sex when we grew up. All some children seem to learn about getting pregnant is that if you do it early enough you can get on a housing list, be paid for doing sod all.... thats the circle the government has to break in my opinion.
