Got the funeral on Monday of the last of my late Mum's family, my aunt (83)was the last one of that generation so the end of an era I suppose.

I suppose the upside is that my brother and I have inherited her house in Sidcup in Kent, but how the hell do I even begin to start to clear out years of collecting of possessions?

I have decided to spend the whole of next week back up in the South London area, really not looking forward to going through all those rooms and boxing things up.

Has anyone else had to tackle things like this?...how did you dispose of the belongings?

we were totally brutal and just got a company in to clear it.did not want to go go through everything ourselves.

did it with my grandma. boxed up personal belongings, phoned up the YMCA for the rest and they fetched it for their charity shops.

yes i did with an aunts place ,i recommend you dont rush it as there may be many valuable items you do not realise have value ,as an example we found a swastica flag it was massive with bullet holes in it (which her husband bought back from the war) .It turned out to be one of the ones which used to fly on the reistag and was worth a hell of a lot,so take it easy anything you know is of little value either ebay or to charity ,anything your in the slightest bit unsure of take advice or research .

It's anything valuable I am worried about, last time I visited her in September her stuff was all over the place.

I would hate for a house clearance company to vanish away anything of any value...and there are bound to be some bits.

I might see if I can involve a charity, who can then sell off her furniture for their own funds.

Really have little idea to be honest

all i can say is the antique roadshow is full of valuable stuff picked up for a song ...be careful take your time ,even the most innocuous things can be worth a lot of money..

I agree take your time, whilst clearing out my Grandfathers I found a watch, asked if anyone wanted it, no one did. I was about to throw it out and thought no, hang on to it.

I looked at it months later

It was a gold 1920's Rolex Oyster and was sold for a substantial amount. Not bad for what I thought was rubbish.

Just take your time and I wish you luck, it's not the easiest of tasks

had to do it when my mum died as she lived in a council flat we only had a week to do it, else we would have had tp pay weekly rent on the flat until we did.

luckily my nephews partners family own a ware house business and were very happy to let us move stuff theer untile we could go through it

we just removed personal items and anything boxed that we did not know what they contained

then got a house clearence firm in to get the big stuff like the furniture,

They were not interested as they said it was old fashioned and would not be able to sell it on,

There are a couple of charities in Leeds that provide former homeless people who have been house with furniture. they dont care how old it is as long as its usable. phoned one of thhem they made an appointment and took the lot

One tip if you go to a house clearence firm, make it clear if they take one thing they take the lot, some of them are just looking for the most profitable thing they can sell

we wasnt interested in making money out of what mum left, just wanted teh flat clearing

best find was some lead crystal wine glasses though, they were w wedding present to mum and dad and were considered antique even then, i still have them

Do not get a house clearence company in, all they will do is arrive with a big van a clear the lot, including the garden.

I would take all the clothes to a charity shop (this will leave a lot of space, then seperate in different rooms furniture, kitchen stuff, electricals, pottery, jewellery etc, etc then invite a local auction house round to give you the estimated value on the items...you may be surprised.

Take to auction what you want and either give away and sell the rest on ebay or on local advertising.

The british heart foundation do take electrical items, one of the only ones that do, but this is all my own opinion,I'm sure you'll sort it out.

The very best of luck not a nice job to do at anytime, I've done it twice now.

I've heard of House clearance companies charging YOU for taking the stuff away if they see no value
