Yeah,,,, I think it's partly to do with the use of the word "horrible" that makes the comment appear so objectionable..

Just how is this a racist gaff?

It could be classed as a gaff, but they were not being racist, were they.

Yeah much as I despise racism I have met some very affable individuals who just so happen to hold some rather racist views..,,

What did the "horrible racist" say? Surely that is relevant to whether or not the MP has made a gaff in how he responded.

The horrible racist called a Polish family on benefits spongers.

Because they are a Polish family, that automatically makes anyone that calls them spongers racist it seems.

Only one point of view is allowed when you are an MP

To be fair, it does sound like they were racially stereotyping some local people.

The person could have easily made their point without the words 'Polish' or 'sponger'.

That's the line that's being reported, but it was apparently in the context of a full on "they're coming over here and taking our jobs/benefits/children/young women's virginity" style rant.

Cue the arguments about what defines racism.

"Labour MP Pat Glass caught on microphone muttering about a member of the public.... calling them a horrible racist,,,

Just how is this a racist gaff?

It could be classed as a gaff, but they were not being racist, were they.

Yeah here's the thing,,,,, it's just a thread title....I'm not trying to tell anyone what to think...

What tile do you suggest I should have used instead ...?

I read the thread title as 'Pat Glass "racist" gaff', so never saw it as a problem myself

Mr ddc"

That is how I read it too. The fact that Labour MP Pat Glass has now made a full public apology for the comments suggests she was in the wrong. Just as Gordon Brown was in 2010 when he called Gillian Duffy a 'bigoted woman' for asking a legitimate question about immigration when he thought the microphone was off.

Shut the front door. Ken Livingstone was allowed 4 slip ups and he didn't even resign"

Old red Ken still not been thrown out of the Labour party? Is he still suspended or have Labour let him off the hook again?

Legitimate question phrased in the most bigoted language possible.

He'll be back. Diane Abbott is every bit as bad as him, but she does it about white people so that's OK.

Oh deary me ! The unwritten sharia law of political correctness claims another scalp . If some one is racist is this right ? Staying silent about a racist...is that right ? Offending a racist by openly objecing to their point of view is this right ? I think the elders of this pedantic sharia law that no one voted for yet people can be prosecuted for if they transgress need to give us mere cattle some guidence on this matter .

Don't sweat it. I only know because I attend classes to keep up with the latest double speak.

A couple of years ago John Terry called someone a 'black cunt' and it was the first word in that insult that offended them!!!

Because there's no proof the person was racist.

Does nobody else object to this current trend of secretly recording peoples private conversations and opinions and using them (often without context) to create a "Scandalous" news article?

Surely everyone is entitled to both having their own opinion and to having a private conversation.

Plus, in the last few of these stories, the "scandalous comments" were indeed accurate.... The Chinese guy was rude, them countries were "horribly corrupt" etc.

I have no qualms about calling a spade a spade.......

I don't live in fear of offending anyone who wears their racism or bigotry or homophobia or xenophobia etc etc as a badge of honour....

However I would never suggest someone leans that way without them providing sufficient cause to eliminate all doubt ..

My thoughts exactly. The remark was not part of a public speech and as such is no one else's businness . However some people just seem to enjoy creating problems and trouble .

I disagree.

There are only 3 political parties that have ever won a general election. 1 of those parties last won in world war one so really it's a choice of two.

What these remarks show is that one of those parties has a nasty habit of branding everyone who disagrees with them with a label ending in 'ist'. It also shows how dillusional the party is about people's concerns over immigration, legitimate or otherwise.

That was Gordon Brown who made those comments about life long Labour supporter Gillian Duffy when she asked him a question about immigration during the 2010 general election campaign.

I've only seen the headlines about this so don't know all the details, but if the person accused WAS being racist, what's the big deal?

Nothing, the problem is that the person wasn't being explicitly racist.
