Probably friends, having a good set of friends who aren't afraid to tell you if you're being a dick or making a mistake or just for good advice makes a huge difference I feel.

One of my managers who adopted the role of mentor to me as a graduate. His influence enabled me to develop my career to the point where I now run my own business doing a job I feel passionate about and love. Beats working for a living
