I picked my daughter up from school today in tears. During her math's lesson her teacher asked if there were any Newcastle United supporters in the class. A few of Abbey's mates said "yes sir Abbey is", the teacher then proceeded to say to my Daughter "Have you been crying your eyes out the past few day's then Abbey" to which she replied, "No sir, we were rubbish and deserve to go down" he then said "So what's your plans this weekend, are you going to throw yourself off the Tyne bridge" , She is 12 years of age, I am livid and just can't believe what he has actually said

First of all you need to be absolutely certain that he did say this.

If he did say this it is definately inappropriate for the classroom. This sort of footy 'banter' isnt suitable for kids from an teacher. The teacher is also singling out a particular sub group (Newcastle supporters) for negative comments from himself and giving and example for other children to follow.

Speak to the head about your concerns but try (I know its hard when its your kids) to keep it 'professional' because its harder to be dismissive if you stay calm. Explain your concerns to the Head. A good Head teacher will want to clamp down on this immediately because it is very close to becoming bullying.

Good luck

X

Send a letter of complaint to the school addressed to the Governing body.

This requires disciplinary action as a minimum.

I can understand what you are saying but when you are a teacher, especially for teenagers, there are somethings you don't say, what if a child that was depressed heard this and had never contemplated suicide but heard this teacher saying such a thing and thought 'I might do that' teachers have a duty of care and saying something quite so bad breached that, yes he may not have thought the comment through but he needs to be spoken too, so he doesn't do it again

When your a teacher yes you have a duty of care, let's not forget he is still human. Adults know better I completely understand that but if every teacher spoke like a textbook then there would be no rappor with the students and the teacher.

GOING FORWARD - email the teacher or even go and see him. Speak to him direct but I certainly don't think it's worth reporting him to the school as the knock on effects could be massive towards his career.

Just to be clear - I'm not condoning it and I think things should be reported I. E. Serious serious remarks but in this instance I don't think it should.

I don't think that it's bullying tbh. Just a stupid comment. As a parent of a son the same age and from a family who has been touched by suicide I would be extremely upset. I'm not sure but I don't think my children know that suicide is an option.

I would probably try and get in touch with the other parents because naturally I do blow these kind of things out of proportion

Bang out of order, even if said in jest he needs to be reported to the head. Suggesting to a child to throw themselves off a bridge is surely a safe guarding issue.

There is always rivalry in football and perhaps the idiot is a Sunderland fan.

I think your daughter showed maturity in giving the answer she did, about her team being crap and got what they deserved.

For the teacher to say what he did, especially to a 12 year old takes it beyond friendly rivalry. He obviously wasn't thinking of the possible consequences or thought he was talking to one of his mates. I do think you are right to bring it to the attention of the school. If your daughter was of a different temperament and fragile she could have taken his words literally.

It dosnt need the Govenors etc. Just a firm word from the head. He probably regrets saying it already and if he dosnt then some guidence will help him.

Im sure we have all made mistakes...said things we have regretted at home or the workplace.

As a parent of two kids I have had to visit the school occasionally to discuss the words or action of a teacher. Your blood does boil when its your own kids and it was a crass and stupid thing for someone in his position to say but that is it.

So speak to the Head but dont bay for his blood. It wont help you. Be calm and proportionate.

Update.. Had a meeting with the head and the teacher in question this morning. Teacher was very apologetic and said he totally realised what he said was wrong the minute it left his mouth, he then sincerely apologised to my daughter. The Head spoke very harshly to the teacher and warned him that any further out bursts would result in further action taken.

We are happy as we can be with the outcome. thanks for everyone's comments

This!

If a 12 year old said it to him would he be reporting them? - no. It's hardly front page news and the people suggesting someone might actually do it- get real.

It's stupid thing to say but if you're going to try and end a teacher's career every time they say something stupid then forget about teachers trying to build rapport with children. You'll turn then into robot sounding politicans.

Whatever happened to just taking to the teacher direct and saying that he shouldn't have done that.

I think it's dumb to joke about suicide. The teacher possibly wouldn't know if the child was affected herself by mental health or a close family member. It just seems silly to pick on a child with adult type chat.

Anyway, it was unprofessional to say the least and he ought to apologise.

A few of Abbey's mates said "yes sir Abbey is", the teacher then proceeded to say to my Daughter "Have you been crying your eyes out the past few day's then Abbey" to which she replied, "No sir, we were rubbish and deserve to go down" he then said "So what's your plans this weekend, are you going to throw yourself off the Tyne bridge" , She is 12 years of age, I am livid and just can't believe what he has actually said "

In my experience reporting a teacher gets you nowhere

I went to see the head about one of my kids, she said the teacher hit her over the head with a book as she walked behind her because she was talking

When it comes down to it it's the teachers word against the kid and most people will believe a adult over a child as kids do have tendencies to exaggerate

"You are joking aren't you? He obviously spoke before he thought however I don't think anything malicious was meant! Honestly the way people rock on here like the sun shines out of their...mouths is just a complete joke. He's/she's a teacher doing a hood deed service etc don't jeopardise his job. Had he of said, "their fucking shit you should jump of a bridge" I'd understand.

"Update..

We are happy as we can be with the outcome. thanks for everyone's comments "

Very sensible all round.

Glad it's sorted

Reading through the thread I see that OP has already spoken to the head and the teacher involved. As the parent of a child who struggles with suicidal thoughts, the teachers comments horrified me. ( yes he is getting support thanks), I hope your daughter is OK and hope the teacher will not make such inappropriate comments in future.

"i wouldnt worry about it, i would walk up to him an whisper quietly in his ear "if u ever speak to my daughter like that again you will be going off that fkn bridge" and bid him farewell

How is the above ok let alone the right thing to do?

You are outraged about someone saying something stupid and the way to deal with it is threaten to kill him!

Lol

Surprisingly its very effective when gob shites try and behind the system"

Im not sure I undertand your last comment. Probably predictive text. Can I just ask you .....If Donald Trump was able to stand for Parliament...would you vote for him?

I personally would see it as banter but it would depend soley on the child he said it too. My son would find it funny and say a cheeky comment back but my daughter I don't think would find it funny x

Dangerous words potentially, I'd meet with the head to establish facts then deal with it all properly.

Bump.. hi everyone just an update, the teacher in question on our thread has been sacked today. He told a young pupil aged 13 she looked and dressed like a whore and he also split a students hand open last week when he threw a stapler at him. This guy definitely does not belong in a classroom

"Report the twat to the head that's disgusting thing to say to a child I rang when we got home but the head of house said he had already left. Abbey has to take her reg mark on Monday then go to see her head of house to discuss the matter"

If it was my daughter i would be goong to see the headmaster/mistress. Forget the appointment i'd be straight in the office. I'd also consider reporting him to the teachers union and ofsted. I wouldn't want that teacher anywhere near a child of mine.

I'm condoning his actions but I would be interested to know what the boy said/did to get a stapler thrown at him.

near a big hill in s/ shropshire NOT in

Totally out of order and very unprofessional!!!!

Children of your daughters age are still learning ways of life ( as we till we die ) and are very impressionable and look up to figure of responsibility for guidance !!!!

May of been taken at the time by her teach as banter , but things like that shouldn't be said that a 12 year old imo !

I'd suggest a meeting with the teacher concerned and inform him

Of your upset x

If he has just been sacked, he will be able to teach elsewhere. This clearly contravenes his professional standards and he should be reported to his professional body immediately. You can do that yourself, it doesn't need to come from the head of the school.

Banter is joking around about the team's. No where and never is it acceptable for a teacher to joke about suicide. If one of the other kids said it, the onus is on him to intervene....if that ever happens now, the kid's won't take him seriously. This should not need to be explained to him! Idiot of a man.

in the suffolk countryside

it was banter gone too far, admittedly. i could have taken that at 12 and so could all my kids and my friends..cmon people it was a mistake, not professional misconduct...they see worse things on TV news than this..kids are brought up too wussy these days imo...everything offends and upsets them..err yeah that's life..get over it..it was in context of a footie game and how rubbish the team was doing,as a joke. as rapport (however inappropriate his humour) he doesn't deserve the book thrown at him..ffs, she knows the guy..maybe shes suffering from hormonal sensitivity..

The Town by The Cross

Talk about twisting things.

I think it was mindless for a teacher to say this but only the people on this thread have mentioned suicide. Not the teacher. ALSO........ he did say ARE you going to jump... so contrary to some posts here he did not suggest she did.

Still a bit foolish to joke with children though. Shame...... but the proof is above.
