No clue whatsoever to the answer, but are there more single people now because of the Internet do you think?

i think it's partially responsible yes. it makes it easier to find people to use them, and in a way it makes other people disposable. but only if you're that kind of person who is ok with using others.

but also people, especially women now, have the ability to be independent of a partner so that has helped a lot and i'd rather have it this way than load of people be in unhappy relationships because they can't leave.

society doesn't care if you're married or not now either, yay fuck you contractual agreements.

Yes I think so. Makes it easier for some people to not try in relationships when they can just trade someone in for a better model from the internet catalogue for humans .

i feel there is more choice regarding lifestyle..

i feel there is a living for the now attitude, more so than in the past..

i feel long term relationships are not as impervious to change, as they once were..

i generally feel people are more 'self'-ish in many ways than in the past (this is not a negative connotation, just that people are more interested in their inner world and self actualization, and fulfillment, than before)

i feel interrelations between people and their links with society 'values' and 'norms' are changing

i feel social media and the internet are totally interlinked, but not the total reason, behind these things x

i believe there are more single people because:

1. Marriage is no longer a sacred institution

2. Women now have more control over their lives

3. Having children is not viewed as a necessity

4. Homosexuals are now free to practice their preferences without fear of persecution

5. Divorce is easier

6. We can now move more freely than we have been able too at any time

7. Sexual relationships no longer require couples to be married

8. Universal education

9. The contraceptive pill

10. The loss of religion

11. People living longer

I think compared to the above; the internet has very little effect on the reason why people are able to be single for longer.

I don't think i'm single because of the internet, I think I'm just not designed to be with somebody, I don't think everybody is ment to be in a relationship, only ever been in one relationship in my life, it wasn't for me and I wouldn't go there again

I can't speak for anybody else though

Does the Internet make it easier to be single though?

I understand the accepted reasons for the (I'm guessing) increase in singledom.

I just wondered if the Internet also played a part.

If there was no internet, would people have less affairs? Would they be more likely to leave a relationship? Or stay and put up with the unhappiness?

With no internet, would we be more satisfied with what we could find locally and not expect to use a search engine to find our perfect match "out there" at some point?

Is it easier to find a relationship that works online?

I could argue it either way.

I think there's a lot more short term relationships because of the internet.

Women on pof seem to be there constantly. People having so many dates has led to people being very picky, waiting for the next one to come along.

And instead of just sitting in on a weekday, you can now be on the pull 7 days a week.

It's much easier to meet people now because of the internet so there's less need to settle like there was in the old days, so people keep looking.

i think some people would struggle to have affairs, most affairs happen out of opportunity, but they would abuse their partner some other way instead (out of frustration maybe).

dunno if people would fix their relationships if they had to stay in them. i never wanted to, i wanted out and society helped me do that eventually.

i do think we'd be looking for partners more locally yeah. i still would prefer someone more local to me but am ok with a LDR so long as i see the guy regularly but i'd prefer something more than that.

it's good how you can find more 'perfect' people for you to bond with than local people. like a few years ago i had a great lot of friends online who were teaching me loads and they were just great guys. lost touch with them when i got with my last bf. the internet helped me deal with that split also and meant i didn't have to cope alone and i learned about his covert abuse., so learned about myself as well and thinking of getting myself sorted out properly even though i'm doing alright just with the internet help.

seems to be either way yeah, good points and bad points but you have to experience anything to know for sure what is good for you or not.

Some people are too shy to approach one another in person, so the internet makes it easier for them to find a partner. People who use Internet for affairs, would just visit swinger clubs, bars, pubs otherwise, I wouldn't say the internet is the cause but a utility.

I always imagine that there is more likely to be less single people now due to the internet.

With endless websites and various apps, infinitely more opportunities are available for people to find somebody who is potentially compatible to them.

This must expose more people who have the confidence in the mindset that there is literally someone for everyone out there.

Just my thoughts anyway, but I would love to see the actual stats.

I think there's the same amount (or percentage) of single people. The same amount of people cheating on their spouses, the internet has a box where you can tick 'single' on it though and so ta-daa there are more single people.

I am assuming OP means terrestrial media when saying Internet as that covers mass media pressures, influences and freedom of thought and expressions on society. If that is what is implied then I'd say...'all the above have come about at the pace which it has directlydue to it. Think about it...most of the above list have happened with such ease in volume and complexity in the last 20 yrs. It was happening 50 or 200 yrs ago in small isolated incidents and pockets but was demonised by the majority. The way social media works is that it can give a very false image of something...If we read or see it on social media we now assume it must be wide spread if not we certainly can now get in touch with similar thinkers and groups whereas before we were often isolated from others. Social media has also influenced our minds to be more accepting of things less accepted in the past.

There's lots to be said for and against...

You seem to be assuming that the Internet are the cause for breakups which are the cause for being single.

I lived happily as a single person for ages because I had the means to do so. Twenty years ago I doubt as a woman I would have been able to do so as easily.

I suspect that the Internet has spread the message of activism for equality faster in this third/fourth wave which has meant it could reach more people in a stronger way than ever before and that will help many women to be independent. But the message has been there for longer - it was just harder to get it out there.

I'm single because of my career

i can't set roots....

Women are more choosy and selfish as a result of a more liberated society. Dating sites etc have certainly helped that.

My friends say I'm a serial dater- I'm meeting new women all the time, but just as dates and sometimes blooms into friendship.

I also think it is harder to meet a single man these days because of the advances in gaming. Loads of guys I know will happily stay in and play xbox or playstation for hours on end on their own rather than socialise out and about.so when they do go out with friends they are out with friends not on the prowl.

The Internet and dating apps on phones have meant we can access sex as and when we want it without the emotional connection but we are becoming more and more socially isolated doing so.

I'm on most dating sites and here and I'd love to meet someone to date and grow with. Seems impossible.
