Alternative vote VS first past the post

How are you guys going to vote and does anybody care? I'm AV by the way, though I'm still can be flipped.

A referendum to change the voting system to av instead of first past the post. AV is rubbish, but so is first past the post.

I'll vote to keep it the same.

AV = Alternative vote. I think its similar to the way we vote in Scottish elections and as someone said earlier, in European ones. The argument goes that with AV we might have more coalition govenrments, but MPs would have to work harder to secure a majority vote.

Given the general apathy highlighted by the low turn out in the Welsh referendum...if the turn out is 35%...is that going to be accepted as legit ...

When they first announced they were going to do it I knew it wasn't full proportional rep, but I thought people would be more excited. This is a real chance for smaller parties to have a better chance at getting power, so in theory - no more wasted votes. In most cases that might be good, but with BNP types it would force the major parties to face them head on and debate them. Win-win from my perpespective. Although UKIP getting more votes does make me queasy

It's precisely that that has me concerned. Small fringe parties gaining seats at Westminster to give them a soap box on which to build. The three main parties we have now cover pretty much every issue affecting our day to day lives with another 5 or 6 parties with enough elbow room to give Lab, Con & LD a shove every now and then.

Our electoral system doesn't need fixing and Clegg only fought tooth and nail for it as he knew AV was the only way his party will ever achieve real power (I dont see the LD as having a credible voice in the coalition).

First past the post for me. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

not quite with this form of AV...

they call this type AV+... what happens is that if one candidate doesn't get 50% of the vote, the one with the lowest gets knocked out and there 2nd prefence gets tallied up.. and so on until one candidate did get 50%..

AV+ is the same system they use in london for the mayoral election....

The Scottish Parliamentary system is wierd.

According to the Electoral Commission

"General elections to the Scottish Parliament are held every four years. There are a total of 129 elected Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) - 73 of which are constituency members elected using the first-past-the-post system. The remaining 56 are regional members who are elected using the party list system."

The end result is that the 56 regional members aren't actually elected as individuals but as representatives of their party and are forced to climb the greasy pole of party politics to get to the top of the list for their location.

Essentially they're MSPs nobody has voted for and almost invariably instantly forgettable and forgotten.

I think it's even simpler than that. The LDs are going get creamed at the local elections in May, and unless Clegg can get electoral reform that will give his party a % of the votes that his core support will afford him, his whole party is going to be signing on the dole the day after the Gen Election in 2015.

He's lost the youth vote for an entire generation. Regardless of whether you think Uni fees are right or wrong, he lied to them and I don't think the LDs will ever get those votes back.
