"My ex thought that windfarm turbines had motors in to keep them turning when there was no wind ....." She was right then: well they don't have a motor, but during long periods of no wind, the generator is used in reverse as a motor to turn the blades for short periods to ensure that the gearboxes don't sieze. In very light wind, they also drive the blades for a short while, to start them turning, to overcome inertia; once the blades get to a certain speed, the wind can then sustain the rotation. | |||
