I have been advised the best contraceptive / way of controling period also is the coil... The one with a hormone in it also ... Anyone any experience of it as I have never had one before ... Had the implant and the mini pill... Any advice ?

Mine took about 3 months for mine to settle, and it is a bliss once it has!

No more periods, woo hoo!

Please bear in mind that I have had non-hormonal coils since I was 19, and am used to them.

The major difference between the Mirena and non-hormonal ones for me is the absence of periods, PMT, and period pain.

Highly recommended.

i had the mirena coil and it played havoc with me...irregular periods and caused me lots of pain...i think its a case of everyone is different, have heard it suits alot of people though , maybe im just unlucky

Sharon has the coil ....it makes for a life without the usual monthly feminine woes ....and no need fer remembering anything ...

She dislikes having it fitted intensely ...however its a minor grumble for her ...

It suits her and me ....I haven`t had the snip ...

I had one. Bled for 5 weeks initially and then no periods. But had PMT almost 2 weeks out for 4 and no libido whatsoever - had mine taken out. Know loads of people with them who think they are absolutely wonderful - well worth a go!

i have marena coil 6 years .... been really good i would get very bad periods and with that in that become very light.... had it taken out oct ..but peroids back very bad and i have new one fitted 26th march before thay put them in you have to have all sorts of tests now ...even for STI s so just had them all and clear .. not every place fit coils so had a job finding a place close as everyones so booked up. But for me best thing i have had and felt good .. xx

had the coil fitted twice and it was worst thing i ever tried....... had infection after infection. my doctor has now given me medication called mefenamic acid and its brilliant....... very little apin and much lighter periods too!!!

I had one put in back in September. Had pain every day. They told me it would take six months to settle. I managed four and had it removed at the end of January!

Never again!

I have had the implant for past 3 years and just had another one inserted. It has been fantastic and controlled my endometriosis fantastically.

You say you tried implant ..... no good for you ???

Never liked the idea of a coil

Had a mirena coil fitted 2 years ago. Had a few months of light irregular bleeding and mild stomach cramps then when it settled (about 3 months for me) it was by far the best thing I'd tried. Having it fitted is pretty uncomfortable but so worth it.

Had the mirena for 3 years after having the injection for about 10 years. Horrible having it inserted, awful cramps but settled soon afterwards. Light bleeding for 3 months then nothing.

Then I started to get really sore boobs - huge pillows and burning hot a few days a month. I had then decided to have a balloon ablation so coil wasn't put back after tht procedure, but I have no periods due to lining of uterus being removed. If your family is complete I'd recommend that for heavy periods, but you can in very rare cases still get pregnant, but the embryo has nowhere to embed.

Didnt realise how much mirena coil/injection controlled my libido though until I stopped using them as contraception - horny as hell now - which is sometimes a problem in itself lol!

Implant has a much higher hormone level so not so keen as having problems.... Bodys changed and had a kid since having implant last

Don't think the Mirena had changed my sexual appetite at all.

Agree with the insertion procedure being uncomfortable for the uninitiated.

I am sure I am not the only who dread having internal procedures such as having smear test.

However, I no longer mind having a cold stainless steel speculum inserted!

Interesting thread to stumble on for us at the moment.

C has been suffering from a horrendous cycle of basically 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. Not a good thing for someone who has a high drive.

She had tried everything else and only made it worse. Last year she tried the normal coil and still no help so almost as a last resort they are suggesting the hormone coil.

Mixed feedback atleast helps with the thoughts, though the possibility of it either just settling her into a normal pattern or even stopping the dreaded painter visit makes it atleast worth a try.

Its that or its time to see the doctor with the shears for M.... gulp./

Just had my second hormone coil fitted - they recommend a new one every 5 years.

Worked great for me though I can appreciate its different for everyone. No periods, no pms, still have high sex drive. couldnt be better.

I would say try it x

Shaz has the implant, she never had a single period or any period pain for the first 2.5 year.

She's having another fitted on wednesday though as the one she's got in has got weak now and her periods have came back.

She loves it.

.

Five years, and can remain as a non-hormonal coil after that for those that are my age, which is 46.

none them worked for me so had to have hystorectomy at 35 and have never looked back best thing i did ....i wish had done when 30 not waste them 5 yr suffering .

Indeed, and it is delivered locally rather than systemically.

I can't tolerate hormonal contraception - the pill did not agree with me when I first tried it years ago!

I could not have it done on the NHS when I was in my 30s, as I was informed they would not do that to anyone so young, in case they change their mind etc...!

thats a shame hun i had already had the tubes tied any way when i was 28 ......but then i was lossing lifes blood had to have hystorectomy dnt have no scar was all done from inside i was back on feet after 4 weeks shagging lol .....even was on hymapiliac tablets stop bleeding it didnt .

Do they still use those? Have the new disposable plastic ones at our surgery those steel ones were horrible contraptions.

How do you get on with the Mirena coil when the main hormone is levonegestrel which is also an ingredient in combined oral contraceptives. I never had a problem with oral contraceptives and Im the same with the Mirena coil. I love it. It took a month or so to settle down, had irregular bleeding, but it soon did settle and ive had no periods for about 8 months now, its great for swinging

I had the Mirena for a year - then got it taken out and replaced with normal coil. The good thing about Mirena was lack of periods but I put on over a stone, felt awful and got acne ( at 44). All wieght fell off when I got it removed.

The insertion of the Mirena coil was not that bad, uncomfortable yes, but not pain as in screaming out full on agony.

I havent had babies naturally so my cervix is very tight so it did take a few good old pokes to get the coil in. What wasnt very nice was, because of my profession, the GP didnt think it odd to show me the amount of blood and tissue on the knitting needle type implement she was using to open up my cervix

I believe I can tolerate the Mirena coil better because the amount of hormone released is much lower that the levels typically found in the combined or progesterone-one pills, as it is absorbed topically locally.

It makes sense IMHO, as I don't trust using condoms alone as the main form of contraception.

Yes the hormone is released slowly so thats a real bonus isnt it, though some do have the opposite problem. Im glad im ok with it as its so convenient. Its in there, no periods, and will last 5 years, its great

That happened to me too so I had a new one fitted 2 months earlier than it was due.
