Do I follow my head or my heart - car related

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

I have a car on lease and its time to change...

I dont want to pay a huge deposit so narrowed it down..

Had a ford focus 1.6 diesel for the last 3 years and to be fair its been amazing... but my doggy doesnt fit well in the boot..

Now i have been looking all sensible at estates and things like the mazda6 2.0. Another ford or a 308 estate... but then i found for zero deposit or 395 for the better spec.. i can have the alfa giulietta... now im a life long alfa fan...

I have about 20 sensible practical cars on my list.... but what do i do.

Remember i dont need to worry about running costs or breakdown etc..

Unless they are contributing to the cost go with what you fancy, have you looked at any cars you can go topless in ?

Your dog would love a convertible

It's only for the trip down to save you hiring a boring car you can take it off when you are there.

Whilst we are on it, most leases you have to pay insurance on top which puts me off. The only option I'd have all in would be Peugeot just add fuel? Am I right in saying that? Hate Peugeot with a passion so that's a no go!

The Peugeot all inclusive is aimed at kids with no insurance history, if you've no claims etc it's cheaper to get your own.

Go for the Alfa. I'm currently on my 5th (a GT) they're not as bad as many would have you believe.

That being said, the Giulietta isn't really a true Alfa Romeo anyway.

I've never had an engine fault in ten years of driving Alfa's. The engines are excellent, hence why Saab and Vauxhall use/d them.

The electrics were dodgy back in the 70's and the bodies were prone to rust in the early 80's. 99% of those issues are sorted now but the bad reputation has stuck - no thanks to Top Gear.

Not being pedantic or obtuse.

But if Alfas are so good why is it that old Alfas like all other FixItAgainTomorrow cars are like hens teeth (rare) As for your comment about Saab and Vauxhall using their engines I would also point out that Saab went out of business and old fiat powered Vauxhalls are rare beasts too.

Saab went out of business because they couldn't keep costs down because they kept fiddling with cars given to them by GM and were selling all their cars at a loss. GM got tired of this and pulled the plug.

Alfa powered Vauxhall's aren't rare at all, the 150bhp 1.9 diesel engine they use is an Alfa engine.

Older Alfa's are rare because of the rust issues they suffered in the 80's and later models are rare because everyone was scared of the rust issues and didn't buy them. That began to change with the introduction of the 156 and 147 though.

Would that be Alfas and Vauxhalls powered by the rebadged Peugeot 1.9 150BHP diesel engine that most manufacturers used in the 90's?

Nope. That Alfa engine is an Alfa design. Ford used the Pug engine (still do).

Driving can be tedious these days, especially if you have to deal with rush hour traffic, so you need to make sure that your car keeps you smiling.

I'm another alfista and would go for the guilietta every day......until I looked at the new mazda 6 sport tourer. You're getting a German inspired exec saloon with Asian reliability at a snip of a price compared to the big three Germans.

You'll always have a smile when you're driving if you buy the alfa though.

Red Alfa's fade to pink unless you regularly us a UV stable wax or sealant.

Personally I'd go with black, specifically Etna black. In the sunlight it changes colour from black to gold, to purple to red. It's an incredible paint.
