New microwaves

Just took delivery of a lovely new microwave.

Lots of buttons on it, so, being a little unusual in that, despite what people say, this guy actually reads the manual, I read the manual.

Towards the end, I get to some handy tips about using the micro to defrost (now, bare in mind this IS NOT a combi oven with a grill).

I get to this bit, which makes me got "wtf?"

"Microwave cooking" - "Defrost tips- shield thin end of chops or steaks with foil"

and this bit further down...

"Roast meat joints - shield the edges with foil strips"

And again...

"Poultry - Shield wingtips and leg tips with foil"

Now, again, I have to say, this model doesn't have a grill, nor is the manual a "multi-type" manual, its for this model specifically.

So... foil... in a micro...really?

I've emailed them to ask, after all, maybe tech has moved on, however, the manual does warn against metal utensils, or using cookware with a "metallic glaze".

So, am I being over-cautious, or have they made a huge "ooppss"?

And, just for the record, no, I'm not dumb enough to try it

Stick it in. If it sparks take it out. No harm done.

Wouldn't surprise me, but you'd think they might mention that in the manual...

we do afterall live in a world where people will sue over just about anything lol.

"Only use microwave-safe foil"

somewhere in the sticks

There's a physics lesson in there somewhere…foil is usually aluminium & this may act differently when 'radiated' (microwave cooking is done by radiating heat) than other metals-which don't work well in microwaves...

If you really want the answer you need to ask 'the doors' as he knows everything

It doesn't radiate heat, it uses radio waves at a very high frequency took "vibrate" the molecules in the food, thereby inducing heating from within.

The same can happen if you touch an antenna from a piece of radio equipment as it transmits, RF (radio frequency) burns were a big risk that we were warned against.

Errr…there are 3 ways of heating things: conduction, convection & radiation -you're describing how radiation works fella & thanks, but I already know

if it says it just put it in, microwaves have changed over many years the parts they put in them pretty much nothing in a microwave nowadays.

Nah, you're alright dude, I tell you what, if you are that sure its ok, you do it, and let me know how it went!

(Disclaimer... this is what's known as sarcasm, it's not really a direction for this guy to actually carry this out, if this guy is dumb enough to do this, I absolve myself of all responsibility for any exploding kitchen appliances.

For the record, I do not recommend anyone puts foil in a microwave!)

Don't worry about putting metal in the microwave. That's what the fire brigade exist for...
