I'm reading a book at the moment and there's a girl in it who makes sure she does a random act of kindness every day. I thought it was quite a nice idea and wondered how many people still do nice things for people they don't know.

So... my questions - what and when was your last random act of kindness?

I still try ta think of others pretty much everyday

Holding doors open,seeing if some of my more elderly customers need anything before i leave etc

But over the years i have seen helpfulness and politeness decrease and that makes me sad xx

i've done that - someone was about 50p short for some new shoes in DP's so i gave her it

well.....cant have someone go without shoes now can i????

is a "random" act, kinder than a "planned" act I wonder???, many people give to charities both here and worldwide through direct debits, many others give their time and raise money for red nose and children in need appeals, I think kindness is still alive and well in our society, long may it be , hugz, Ruby, xxx

i think random acts are more prsonal as you see someone in the street in need of help and act on it instantly etc

giving to charity os of course kind and should be encouraged but you rarely see first hand how your kindness has helped someone

I try to do RAK's wherever possible. I've posted before about standing in a queue and a little old lady was talking to my daughter. She was telling her that it was her 80th birthday today and she decided to treat herself to a birthday cake. When it was her turn to pay, I gave the cashier the money and wished the lady Many Happy Returns for the day.

At Christmas I've bought some gloves, scarf, and hot water bottle, put them in a gift bag and then had my children decide who of the Big Issue sellers will receive the gift. If they have no need for them, I have asked them to pass them on to someone they know who does.

I've lent money to someone I know, who was in financial difficulty. I have told them to 'pay it forward' one day in the future when they have money to spare and see someone else in trouble.

I love doing RAKs, not for the thanks but because I like seeing the look of surprise and the smile on their faces. Makes my day.

I was driving down the lane from my house and a bloke in a disabled blue scooter car thing had broken down. I asked if he needed help. He said there was a new system and he had a card and number to ring for breakdowns but he had left it in house. I offered to drive him down there. As we talked he said he had been fit and active in his youth and played for a Northumberland amateur football team and said his best time was when they won the cup. He added "I bet you weren't even born then pet!!!"

We got to his house and he found the card and showed me a pic on the wall of him and the winning side and the cup displayed proudly at the front - when I looked at it the date underneath it was the exact same day I was born - I was absolutely gobsmacked! Isn't life full of coincidences from doing favours? I used to go and do a bit shopping for him after that but he died about 8 years ago. His son asked if I wanted anything from the house but the pic had been given to his nephew.

Yep ...kindness is a quality that attracts wonderful things into yer life .....as an exercise I was once asked to do an act of kindness every day ...however small...if the person found out it was me it didn`t count .....after a while my attention was focused on this all the time ..my waking thought ...it certainly coloured my view of life ....gifts and blessings that I would of missed ..became more apparent..and led me to have several experiences with people with twinkling eyes haha ....a simple exercise really ....just finish by saying I`m no saint ..however tis good fer the soul..

I was recently driving home down a country lane at around midnight when someone tried to flag me down but I drove past, got home and felt guilty, so I went back. He had broken down and had no phone, so I tried to push start him to no avail, so gave him a lift home instead.

You do feel good about doing something for someone with no motive on your behalf

At two-thirty in the morning I was woken up by the door bell, I went downstairs and opened the door where there was a man standing on my doormat. he asks me if I could give him a push to which I replied "no I fucking can't! not at two-thirty in the fucking morning!" and slammed the door on him.

I get back into bed and the wife asks me who it was. I tell her "it was some tosser, looking for a push" my wife however is furious and reminds me how we broke down once late at night and had to ask someone to give us a push, and that we would have never been able to continue if it wasn't for the man who helped us.

I sighed and put on my coat and slippers, I walked back downstairs and opened the door, the man isn't standing there anymore so I shouted into the darkness "hey! do you still want a push?"

"yeah!" the voice replies

I can't see him so he asks where he is.

"I'm over here, on the swings"

Something that I find fascinating is nursery stories ....and realising their inner truths as an adult ...teaching stories if yer like ...

One that comes to mind is the shoemaker and the elves who made shoes for him during the night ..they laboured happily ...doing a deed fer the old struggling shoemaker...they did deeds whilst they sung and danced ...rejoicing in something ...that special something in seeing a smile of happiness in others ...

due the work i do i often come across a homeless guy about 3am sleeping in a bus shelter, as i have to stop there i awlays go get him a hot drink he does not seem to have an alcohol or drug issue bfromfrom the way he behaves.

he is in York, and its damn cold through the night at the moment

I also will hold doors open for pansioners and those struggling with kids the lack of thank yous does demoralise me, but still it is teh way i was brought up, so will continue to do so

while we're on the subject...Westminster Council have announced a ban on sleeping in the streets or feeding anyone who does.

There used to be a young homeless girl near embankment tube station who I would buy a tea and a sandwichn for on my way home from work. apparently I'm not allowed to anymore as this "only encourages her to be homeless"

Westminster Council find the homeless an embarrasment, they will ban them from sleeping rough by any means they can find.

Just a start, they will soon have London squeaky clean and sterile, they won't want a single person sleeping on the streets by the time the Olympics come around.

I foresee legislation from this government on this issue, the 'Great Unwashed' need to be swept under the carpet according to the well heeled.

Probably our kindness is that we are voluntary community first responders for the ambulance service and give up our free time to try and keep people alive (who have had anything like strokes, cardiac arrests, seizures, chokers, diabetic emergencies, unconscious, breathing difficulties etc) until the ambulance crews get there.

Its actually very rewarding.

In winter we always go trawling the streets for the homeless when its bitterly cold and hand out sleeping bags, food/drink etc out of our own pockets. It could be any one of us.

When i was at school there was a homeless guy who used to sit at the bus station day in and day out..i always used to use my dinner money to buy him some food and a drink and got him into contact with people who could help him.

He's now changed his life and got his own family and a decent job. Im still in contact with him now and we meet up on occasion.

Recently with the business we often donate the odd product for raffles etc to good causes (like Fabs bradford social), but we have to be very careful with what we pick! lol. Always help those less fortunate than yourselves.

I tend not to do random acts of kindness after an incident a few years back. A friend of a friend was waiting for her outside work, but she hadn't come in that day as she was sick. I'd seen him a couple of times with her so said "hi".

He asked for my friend and I said she was off sick for a couple of day. He looked a little upset so I asked if he was alright. He said that he'd come to see our mutual friend as he was a little short of money, and didn't have anything to eat and he wondered if she'd help him.

Well, being the mug erm I mean, kind hearted woman I am, I felt a bit sorry for him and said I was going to Sainsbury's if he wanted he could pick something up to eat there and I'd pay for it.

He was really greatful, and he picked up some chicken portions, mixed veg and some pototes.

I thought that was the end of it, but the following evening he was there waiting outside work but for me. I said "hi" and was about to go on my merry way when he stopped me, and was a little put out. I asked him what was wrong and he said he couldn't cook the chicken I'd bought him the night before ...because I'd forgotten to buy him seasoning!

There's nothing wrong with performing random acts of kindness as and when the opportunity arises but telling people about them seems to diminish the act somehow.

Once done, that random act is of no value unless it spawns more of the same. Kinda like giving £2 on a direct debit! It clears the concience and makes people feel they are doing something, but you have to admit, it is the easy way out.

Kindness should be an every day act that you don't even notice, because that way kindness is normality..

Very true, but if by sharing the information in a conversational way inspires others to do RAKs, then isn't that a good thing?

I'm not convinced. I believe some people intrinsically know the right and good things to do and go about their lives quietly doing just that without thought of recognition, reward or influencing others to emulate them.

Some folks, however, simply look for reasons to be held in higher regard than they would otherwise be.

I've seen charity Christmas cards used as an example before. By all means give money to your chosen charity but don't send the receipt to your friends.

One point of view I guess. Is it blabbing though? I think its a cynical thought on your part because its a thread subject and the acts still happened whether or not they were aired on this thread. Do the posts make you feel any different towards the person writing them?

They're anecdotes like any other anecdote and I don't think anyone was writing them to feel good about themselves, just doing it on face value without the negative thoughtsyou seem to have about being kind, that in itself could potentially dampened the thread for some.

You can't water down a kind act just by hearing about it but - you can think 'fucken dogooder' which isn't very nice.

There are loads of posts on this forum about what people do in their day to day lives - some are funny some are sad some are kind some are cruel. So what? I for one enjoyed reading about others experiences and found it pleasant reading.

I can be a reet twat at times but it doesnt cancel out anything nice I have done nor make up for anything nice I will do.

My thinking behind posting it was to make other people think about it like I did after reading my book.

I like that some of you have shared the good things you've done. There's nothing wrong with feeling good about a good deed. Sharing it with others is cool if you want to. If you'd rather be quietly kind then that's cool too.

At least everyone has thought about it and that, for me, is enough.

I have across a few car accidents.as they have happened and taken the lead with first aid and barked orders out. Done that a number of.times.

Once in tesco a lady had a.seizure and helped her and took control. Put my brand new.xoat under head to cushion her as calming and got slimed on. The first aider was there somewhere but no idea who as i took control. Tesco gave me a voucher as a thanks and cleaned my coat.

Have also seen an old lady wheeling herself slowly in town somewhere and walked past her to then turn back and offered to wheel her to her destination. Did this with the lady twice.

Also old lady asked directions to a house which for her would have been a half hour walked so drove her there instead.

I am one of those people that cant walk past if someone needs help.

Grrrrr!

These negative comments in response to other posts really drag down a nice thread, thanks to the OP for her intention, and to all those who also have good intentions.

Last Winter I was on the receiving end of a R.A.K. when I had a blowout in the snow on Cannock Chase.

A lovely man changed my tyre for me and I was very grateful, as I couldn't physically loosen the factory tightened wheelnuts.

So keep it up folks xxx

You can't water down a kind act just by hearing about it but - you can think 'fucken dogooder' which isn't very nice.

I can be a reet twat at times but it doesnt cancel out anything nice I have done nor make up for anything nice I will do.

My sentiments too.

Telling others what a wonderful person you've been so they can feel good about you too is something else

Not on a thread that asks for people to share these tales though surely.

I agree, I've seen people do a little good for a change and tell everyone willing to listen, but I believe this to be different.

I'd share all the good I've done here, if I did any, haha

We do random acts of kindness most days. We only realised how much from reading this thread. We don't think about it we just do it naturally, as it's the way we were brought up.

Our children are the same, if they see someone struggling, or feel they need help they will always offer without even thinking about it.

The problem is that random acts of kindness by their very nature seldom make the press.

We weren't being negative in the last sentence of our post. Just how we see things.

You're out and see someone struggling and lots of people just look and walk past. We think if that was them how would they feel.We just automatically help.
