not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds)

I never see them parked outside schools or 20 mph residential areas .

Anybody see them parked outside schools ?

I see them mainly parked at the side of dual carriage ways or other main roads.

I had to do a speed awareness course a couple of months ago and all of the other 15 people on the course were caught by the same mobile camera on a hill where the speed changes fro 40 to 30...

I imagine they aren't allowed outside schools because then they'd be filming minors without permission. There would be uproar.

I'm a van driver. I've always got my eyes open for them. Had a police motorcyclist a couple of months back in a 30 zone with a camera on a tripod. His bike was tucked in behind so u didn't know he was there till u was on him. Touch wood I've not been done yet.

Safety cameras my arse...they are revenue generators, pure and simple. This is why you don't see them where they are needed, as the OP says, rather you will see them located just after a reduction in the speed limit......

Nothing to do with this.

I know one location where they film near a school and always at peak time but even here they are not directly outside the school but 500 metres up the road where the 30 limit ends.

They have responded to local pressure to be on that road at that time but the exact location has not been chosen to catch people speeding past the school gates (because they don't as it too busy) but at the point where people are most likely to be accelerating before leaving the 30mph.

It wall always be the same. It's a shame as it lessens they're real impact on road safety.

I'm not sure if they're allowed or not as the case may be,

I'd rather speeding drivers were deterred by the mobile vans where my kids might be playing than sat at the side of a dual carriage way. It d certainly give them more credibility in my eyes for the 'casualty reduction ' mantra and 'were not doing it as a money making exercise'.

I'm Not surprised....

It's impossible to drive fast past schools the way some parents abandon their cars....

Have you been outside a school at the beginning/end of the school day? It's not speed cameras they need, it's Parking Enforcement.

I like speed cameras, I see it as a voluntary tax. The Chancellor should dramatically increase the number of them, aim to raise £5 billion, and split the money between the NHS and a reduction in fuel duty.

the school by us it's the kids that are the problem.

During kicking out time it's busy, very busy. School buses, cars, kids, lolly pop ladies. You literally can't speed.

Yet despite all this, kids (I'm talking secondary school) so teenagers still find it ok to run out from behind cars, walk out regardless of cars or just walk in the road.

I had a lass do it yesterday, ran straight out from behind a parked car, I was probably doing 15mph....still going to really hurt if a Range Rover hits you even at that speed.

From what I've seen 99% of the time it's lack of braincells from the school kids not the drivers that are the problem.

they do seem to place where they catch more drivers, after the police force could be classed as a business, as others have said where limit changes

Speed limits are speed limits, whether outside schools or on dual carriageways.

As has been said a speed limit is a limit, wherever it's located. However there are a couple of regular places I see them. One hidden behind the limit sign where it goes from national limit to 30 & vice-versa. The second one is where the 30 changes to 40. A further occasional one at the top of a hill where there is an overtaking lane.

I don't understand the logic of people who are genuinely surprised that speed cameras are located on roads where people are likely to be caught speeding. Seems an effective use of resources to me

Adhere to the speed limit then it matters not where the cameras are located.

I think it's those average speed cameras that make the most money people treat them like normal speed cameras ie slow down then speed up after the first one and then slow down again at the second not realising it's average speed everyday on the a3 I see people doing it over and over again

Believe it or not, they are bound up in what they can't do. I actually tried to get speeding enforced on our road, as some people go along it a 60+ , it's a 40 turning into a 30.

The enforcement guy was a nightmare - can't put mobile enforcement near a speed limit change, can't put it after a bend, can't put it where there might be parked cars etc etc

Never understand the "don't speed and you won't get caught" posts that these threads always end up littered with.

It's correct, obviously, but the thread has been started by someone wanting to talk about speed cameras and how correctly or effectively they are used.

You don't see potst where people want to discuss dieting littered with posts saying "well if you didn't eat cake you wouldn't be fat" or posts about STD,s littered with "well if you didn't have sex you wouldn't get the clap".

People speed. People want to discuss it.

Be nice to be able to do so with out all this self righteous crap from people who almost undoubtedly speed themselves.

Yes the speed limit is the speed limit, so if you speed and get caught it is tough. However.....

They are lazy policing. 35 in a 30 zone with a camera is a whole lot easier to prove than the person who switches lanes at the last moment and causes others to brake sharply by their driving without due care and attention. Anyone who drives a lot sees poor and often dangerous driving all the time, but what makes it so is rarely speed in isolation.

Cameras pay for themselves and make it look like something is being done. And hey if like Thames Valley you place cameras on motorways - the safest roads - you deserve all the scorn you get.
