anyone had cataract surgery?

Nope, but I'm wait to have a cataract removed from my right eye. It's been put on hold for the time being as they said my sight isn't affected enough to have the surgery just yet.

Doesn't make sense to me to wait till I can't see out the blooming thing at all. Will interfere with my work and ability to drive. At the moment I've been passed as still safe to continue driving.

The second was a bit more nerve racking as she could see what was going on.

Recivery isn't too bad btw ( well in my case anyway ). Just beware of putting on a Tshirt or similar- the neck brushes your eye more than you'd think. That can sting a bit and you learn after a cpl of times.

"anyone had cataract surgery? "

Recently (over the course of the last 6 months) I have taken an elderly gentleman from across the road to hospital to have his cataracts removed. They did one at a time 3 months space between each.

He is in his 90s has a few other health issues but is generally okay. He was in and out in a day for each op. I had to take him for a few pre-op tests and it can be a lengthy process but now he is back driving (the village is so very scared!) and is generally happy.

Be prepared for:

They write on your forehead (above the eye - it does rub off)

You will look like a pirate for a while

Lots of eyedrops afterwards to help you heal.

Good luck (he said it tickled but he fought a war or two so that may not be a good indication)

My Grandma's op went really well this morning, in zero pain or discomfort. Was discharged 4 hours after the OP (she had a general)

Had 2 sets of eye drops.. both 4 times a day but one lot last a week, the others last a total of 6 weeks

She's got a pretty cool plastic eye protector which she can remove tomorrow morning but might want to use for a few nights after that..

She feels fine xx

I've lost the ability to read books, from my left eye since 2015. The fact that it was also my best long distance eye as well, is now sorely missed.

This is the reason why I banged on about it yesterday, when having my eye test that seeing two blurry shadows is really bad for me, that they are now going to write a letter to the hospital. Hopefully, I will be able to get on the waiting list and fixed sooner, not later.

If it's a cat then as long as you meet the requirements for the amount of maximum correction that can be achieved you'll fit the NHS criteria for an op

It is a cat, I also have a slight discolouration as well, hardly noticeable, until I look at a white computer screen. Not good for being arty on my Mac.

I went through Cataract surgery in September 2015, on a local anaesthetic, and it was the best surgery ever.

Didn't feel any pain, no discomfort at all. If anyone wants any more details, I'll be happy to respond.

As long as you meet the visual standards they'll put you on the list, private is always quicker as you can have it done anytime (my work area)

They basically numb your eye and then clamp your eyelids open.

I've had both eyes done.

I had both done aged 42 when I lived in Australia.

The reason given as I was so young was the extreem uv sunlight and welding plus people with blue eyes are more susceptible.

The procedure sounds far worse than it is

How long does the referral from optician to hospital take, or is it down to the individual hospital trust?

Individual trust, most waiting lists are 12 weeks for pre op assessment then surgery soon after

And obviously given what's going on it may be longer, but all ops are going ahead from referrals we've done

That sounds promising. Just hope my NHS trust can afford it.

After waiting and visiting the reception several times, as I don't like call centres, they are expensive. I finally got fed up two weeks ago, went in, got told, we'll call you on FRiday...nothing happened. So a week later, I went in again and said "Am I on your old computer system or your new one? Can you fuinally give me a dte of the operation, before I go and get my next annual eye test?"

Finally today, the fabled letter arrived, I'll get my eye sliced open (like Arnie did! ) at the end of next month. , only 15 months after the first referral letter.

Tick followed tock, all this because I can't bear bright lights and need GA to keep me still.

I've had fillings without injections, so I know what I can't handle eyewise.

I had cataract surgery last year I was using a grinder and peice came of and hit me in the eye over a few days it caused

a cataract so I went to Manchester Eye hospital for the surgery, honestly didn't feel a thing absolutely nothing went back to my room after and my sight started to come back within 10 mins by10pm that evening it was pretty much OK.

For me when my sight started coming back it did give me a bit of headache because one eye saw normal the other was slanted bit it settled down .

These guys who do the operations like this really are miracle workers.

I'm having a GA, so if I get put under with the same stuff as I did with my septoplasty, then I'll be full of beans.

The one thing I don't know is...when will I be fit to drive and be ready for a visit to the opticians?

When I was in my doc said I could drive the next day, they don't keep the eye covered these days you just where an eye shield at night for 2 weeks that's it

I had it done last week. The operation was done under GA, the only pain I felt was the cannula struggling to pierce the skin, (I think they used a cable tie: it was so blunt.

They walked out of the room and came back in saying "it's done" I hadn't even felt drowsy nor closed my eyes.

I've had dental x-rays, that have taken longer.

There has been no pain, just a slight feeling of a wobblywatery tear drop on the edge of my vision. I have a slight lilac tinge, similar to the UV filter on some cars' windscreens. The long distance focus is back and it feels good.

So far, so good.

Put your foot down and get the general, it's better for the surgeon, as they know you won't twitch and I had zero fatigue, in fact I had so much energy I spent the weekend nursing my partner who was bunged up with post lurgy symptoms.

I love this generation of GAs. No cold hands or arms, no heavy eyelids, no sleep, no dreams, no groggy wake up. I just blinked my eyelids once and it was all done, much to my disbelief.

My throat was a bit sore, but considering I've been plague and lurgy free , I'll take this any day.
