Unless you genuinely need a 4x4 car I struggle to understand why people feel the need.

Bit much for the school run

It's a car.

They want to drive it.

It's not against the law.

They can spend their money how they seem fit.

I have one. Don't have kids so not used for doing the school run. I have a big dog so need a big car to take her out and about with me otherwise she would be stuck at home alot. Surely though people can drive what they like as long as it's insured, taxed and tested

Should there be a law restricting it ?

Is the law all humanity should adhere to with its moral position with regard to humanity ?

It's not against the law to throw plastic bags into landfill ? But I try not to buy them in the first place

Mine is a truck and therefore roughly the same width as a car and easy to park.

The new type discos and range Rovers are pretty wide though. Its fun watching people fail to park them.

To be fair it wouldn't matter if the school was 100 yards away.

It is their chosen mode of transport and this is how they wish to ferry their children.

If they feel it they need to elevate their status and by buying a large vehicle helps them to attain this then good luck to them.

I think its quite funny when all of a sudden someone pops up & has a go at 4x4 drivers. I am one of those people who drive a range rover not for the school run though thats why theres trains & buses. I use mine for towing & yes i actually do go off roading in it.

Next thread will be "4x4 owners are out wrecking our woods driving around & polluting the air"

Sorry op we all have a choice on what car we own & drive. I didnt realise that the 4x4 police had to be informed.

Ticks all my boxes.

PLUS

It will do most everything I want of a car from going down the tip fully loaded (everything from rubble to a cut up hedge) to having a nice drive in the country. The only thing it won't do is 90mph so I guess a track day is out.

Oh as to the size it is 2" narrower than a mini clubman and about a foot shorter. Parking is easy as the wheels are damn near on the corners so little overhang.

P.S. We do go 'offroad'

The elevated driving position adds a bit to safety, because of vision,

But in crash tests, 4x4 are generally less safe for the occupants than ordinary saloons and estates, though they are improving.

Fiat Panda is a 4x4, as are a number of other smaller cars.

But yes, I don't understand why people want a Chelsea tractor as an everyday car - but it's up to them, they pay the VED and fuel duty.

I have a 4.0l Jeep Cherokee - I do have occasion to go off road and I do have occasion to tow or lug heavy loads. It's outrageously fuel inefficient at around 15 mpg, which is why I bought an LPG converted one, so the fuel is half price. But I don't use it as an every day vehicle.

same i understand if your in the countryside or going off road often. but city driving is no need,

annoying part is most people do not know how to park and especially some car parks are designed to minimum standard of space, like the sainsburys by me, the spaces are tiny and no one parks straight as the car next to you is so close.

Actually 4x4 SUV's are not safer travelling at speed or in crashes.

They are more lightly to flip and roll because of their higher centre of gravity injuring their occupants and more lightly to kill others too.

Perceived safety and actual safety are two different thing.

So why do people want hybrid cars or cars that can do an excess of 150 mph.

It's called personal choice yes we have a 4 x4 and it does get used for the school run and towing and sometimes off roading.

As far as I can see it's mostly about personal choice.

The only advantage of 4wd over 2wd is more forward traction. A 4wd wont stop any quicker than a 2wd or hold the road any better in ice/snow/mud (this fact seems lost to some owners)

And of course they use more fuel in 4wd mode. But I've had one so cannot judge others

You don't get what the issue is?

It's obviously not illegal and you can afford it. We live in a 'free' society, so it's up to you.

BUT....

John Moody-Stuart, former CEO of Shell said about ten years ago that any car that didn't do 40+mpg in real world driving was a crime against the environment.

Personally, I think it's more like 65+mpg and it's actually a crime against humanity, not just the environment.

But I know our opinions will differ. And that's fine. But I'm just replying because you don't see what the issue is.

Liquid fossil fuels are one of mankind's most valuable finite resources. Note finite. At current rates of use they are projected to be completely used in just under 50 years. If we destroy the Artic too, you can stretch that out to 56 years last time I worked it out.

Mankind's most valuable finite resources. And there may be none left by the time your children are my age.

And you use them in a vehicle that does how many mpg? That weighs 1.5 - 2 tonnes and accelerates like a bullet (what fun!).

And wastes 60% of that fuel in heat losses. Another 20% in friction losses. And another 15% in idling losses. And of the 5% of useful energy you get from burning mankind's most valuable finite resources, less than 10% is actually burned to move YOU around (as opposed to the 1.5 tonnes of metal surrounding you).

And each gallon you burn produces 10kg of CO2 gas. Yes, 10kg of CO2. Next time you are in a supermarket, pick up 10 bags of sugar and hold them. That weight from one gallon of petrol.

And to avert a catastrophic rise in temperature, we'll now need to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% in the next 40 years.

And you don't see what the issue is.

No I don't to be honest. I need a car to drive. And I chose a 4x4. I need my day to day matters to get done in the easiest of manners.

Climate change is something that will happen. And it's been happening since the inception of 'creation of the world'. Just by one or two people not driving a car or turning off a light switch won't change things around. If there was so much of a concern, there would be tighter regulations.

Crimes against humanity for driving a 4x4? Funny

It's 4.54 litres. And it's 10.3kg.

But, since you asked, by burning it.

Think about it...a hydrocarbon molecule. The light hydrogen molecules form water with oxygen. The heavier carbon molecules (atomic weight 12) combines with two oxygen molecules (atomic weight 16 each) to make CO2 (atomic weight 44ish).

So, a part of a molecule weight 12 goes to weight 44.

Basic chemistry.

Shocking though, isn't it, that EVERY driver in the UK doesn't know that.

"I do approx 3500 miles per year, some car drivers do over 100,000 who creates the most c02?"

Honestly, I'm not tying to create an environment war here. I was just answering a post.

You know the answer to your point though - it depends on the fuel consumption of the vehicle you drive.

But surely the truth is that we ALL should be trying to get our mobility needs in the most fuel efficient package we can, not trying to convince ourselves that it's actually not our fault because there is someone worse than us.

Don't you think?

The carbon monoxide...you don't want to go there....it depends on the combustion process, pressures and temperatures in the engine. Honestly, it's too boring for words. But you can look it up if your interested.

Ok so my rangie does 23mpg. My nissan qashthing does at the moment around 48mpg best being 75. Does that mean im saving the world & wrecking it?

Basically its an old age topic where the 4x4 driver gets it in the neck for driving a gas guzzler & for killing the earth.

shall we kill all cows for farting as they produce more harmful gasses than a 4x4?

The carbon footprint manufacturing a new car is massive...my land rover is 30 years old and still running like it did when it was new.By getting rid of it,and changing to a small car would only be adding to the problem. The advice given out is to run the vehicle you have for as long as you can.Rather than changing cars every 5 or 6 years regardless of whether it's a 4x4 or a smart car.

I have a 4x4. I like it because I tow my boat with it. Go camping with it. I can load it up with shopping and DIY stuff for the house I am renovating. I love the comfort and the high ride height.

Do I need it? Probably not. No doubt I could find another car that does the same.

Do I see it as a status symbol? No, I buy what I want for me.

Do I care what the OP thinks about 4x4s? Nope, couldnt give a flying fuck.

Depends on the road. The limit is 60 on the country lanes, and yet I can think of loads of places where you'd be a fool to do over 40.

Depends on if they slow down for 30's. There's a few drivers out there who just do "around 40" everywhere. I hate these drivers with a passion!

A Passion not seen since one man's crusade against owners of cars with 4 wheel drive transmission systems who have bought these cars with the specific reason of "lording it about". We have now of course learnt that such status symbols are abhorrent. Much better to buy 2 wheel drive luxury cars instead.

EG:

"OI MATE, ARE YOU DROPPING YOUR KIDS OF AT SCHOOL IN A FACKIN' 4X4? YA' PONCE!".

"No it's merely a 4 litre Jag".

"Oh that's fine then."

"If I had the money I'd seriously buy a Mercedes G class 6x6 and run over everyone in a 4x4.

Seriously! I'd buy the 6x6 but probably won't run people over "

If I had the money, I'd buy the Mercedes Car Company, sack all the management and close down production for the good of humanity.

"Because if you drive real close people speed up.

If someone in any car gets up my bumper I slow down!

Roads have a speed limit not a target to reach

I'm not so sure. If I'm traveling along a road with, lets say a 40mph speed limit, then my target speed is 40 mph... I may be in the minority here of course...

If the car in front was doing 39, would you get right up their ass to make sure you were doing 40 though?

I did the voices in my head as I read that "

It has a catalytic converter?

You'd be much better for the environment in a petrol 4x4.

So, getting back to 4x4's...

Do people like them because they feel better sitting higher up? Status symbol? Surely not for their looks as most of them are ugly lumps of metal and plastic.

And not for off-road capability as they usually slow down to 2mph for speed bumps.

The trouble with that argument is, I'm not the one you have to convince. Me changing my life will make not a jot of difference. The powers that be need to be setting the precedent and making people make the change. I'm not opposed to what you are saying, I'm not the bad guy here I'm just doing What i need to do to get by.

And there is the problem. Until people are forced to change they won't.

Big, spacious, make people feel safe, better view from higher up.

Better control in the wet (assuming it actually has 4x4 most of the suvs dont lol) or poor conditions.

Many reasons

I have a 4x4. I like it because I tow my boat with it. Go camping with it. I can load it up with shopping and DIY stuff for the house I am renovating. I love the comfort and the high ride height.

Do I need it? Probably not. No doubt I could find another car that does the same.

Do I see it as a status symbol? No, I buy what I want for me.

Do I care what the OP thinks about 4x4s? Nope, couldnt give a flying fuck."

Tow a boat snd go camping ptetty much fit the "need" bracket of lqrge 4 wheel drive vehicles :p

Roads full of pot holes, ridiculous speed bumps every 200 yards that damage normal cars......why wouldn't you drive an off road vehicle when the local authorities make the roads like some kind of off road assault course!

We don't have one BTW, but are thinking about it!

We could get a nice electric car where the batteries need replacing every 3 or 4 years and charge them using nicely clean environmentally friendly generated electricity from either a coal burning or nuclear power station.....

I just don't understand the hate leveled at 4x4s, there's not even that many which are permanent four wheel drive these days. Luxury or sports cars can be much worse for the environment. But never get a mention. My old freelander used to do 45 to the gallon, my wife's espace does 22! Yet it's the 4x4 that attracts the prejudicial hate.

"What did you do in the climate war, Grandma?"

"Oh, I used a 4x4 to drive your Mum four miles to school twice a day. It was OK though, because I didn't live in a simplistic world!"

So could i ask where do you go on holiday & how do you get there? A plane by any chance?

I holiday here so i pay for fuel here i shop in the local towns & villages & 9/10 when i arrive at my holiday destination i leave the rangie on site & believe it or not walk hence cutting down my carbon footprint. So before you carry on knocking us for having a big car think of the next generation asking questions like "mom how do you get to a foriegn country?"

"You drove to the airport & catch a plane"

And before you ask i didnt buy a range rover for status. I bought it cuz it does the job i want it to do

And what's that? To burn fossil fuel needlessly?

Do you want me to work out the CO2 per passenger kilometer for your 4x4 and compare it to the CO2 per passenger kilometer for a passenger jet?

Do you want me to research the tonnage of CO2 from the road transport sector compared to commercial aviation (it's less than one fifth if memory serves me correctly. I can go check though if you want)

Right. I need a truck to shovel shit into, that I can put a big round bale of hay/straw in, that can go across fields in winter, tow a trailer/harrow/roller, that I can pick my friends daughter up from school in (her school is in the middle of know where so we can't walk and the buses are rubbish) ..... can you find me a prius that can do all that? Or should I have a tractor AND a car??

I think you would need to care first.

If you did, you'd make the right choice anyway

Are you actually serious? What planet do you live on? This is typical townie bullshit. How do you think your food is grown and raised?? Do you think it magically appears in tesco? People in the countryside need hard working vehicles. I'm sure most of us would love to afford clean economical vehicles but because of people like you none of make the kind of money to afford one. Until you've walked the walk don'tare yourself look stupid by making some faffy vague comment about me not caring because you can't provide a decent answer. "

Marry me.

"Oh & one last point. Why should i be ashamed? Im nowhere near ashmade to drive a 4x4.

When i come to trade the old girl in & buy another 4x4 i'll invite you up here to test drive it

Well, if it's me your inviting, I'll thank you but decline.

You wouldn't be ashamed. But I would. Very. Actually, I wouldn't be seen dead.

And that's OK. You are allowed your point of view. I am allowed mine.

My only hope is that as we advance as a society, more and more people will look on your choice with ever greater disdain. History will be on my side.

I suspect by what you say though, you won't care.

But that's fine.

Well if your ever taken ill somewhere off the beaten track & you need assistance dont forget to tell the emergency services ie fire, police, ambulance, mountain rescue, life guards not to come in an off road vehicle cuz they cause to much CO2 & you wouldnt be seen dead in one. Ye right

Hmm...I'd prefer to get my kids to school in one piece. Cycling 4 miles on a busy a road isn't worth the risk so I'll be sticking to driving. It must be great to live in a simplistic world.

Well enjoy it while you can. The way we are all going your kids won't have the opportunity of driving their kids to school in the same way.

"Oh that's fine then."

.

Maybe the moral of the story is walk your kids to school, or bike where walking is a bit far.

You'll be healthier, wealthier and apparently wiser as well!.

Hell you walk enough and you'll be able to show off a really good body!.

Or just keep on trucking in your truck but let's not keep on with the who's kidding who routine

Hmm...I'd prefer to get my kids to school in one piece. Cycling 4 miles on a busy a road isn't worth the risk so I'll be sticking to driving. It must be great to live in a simplistic world..

It's hard, life I mean, I could tell you the real problems that will face your children, there not pretty, in fact there bloody awful, the trouble I've found with telling people that they're behaviour is bad, is they dig their heels in...

The truth is the two choices offered to you are shit...

Your going to have to give up alot.. Like loads, or, you can carry on and your kids will really live a life of utter horror...

It's like doctors with antibiotics, if they keep giving them to you for stuff like coughs, sure it will be easier for you... But your kids will probably end up having to live without any of the benefits of them for when there really really ill.

I know the choices are bad but that's life.

Pick your side and live with the consequences

The trouble with that argument is, I'm not the one you have to convince. Me changing my life will make not a jot of difference. The powers that be need to be setting the precedent and making people make the change. I'm not opposed to what you are saying, I'm not the bad guy here I'm just doing What i need to do to get by.

And there is the problem. Until people are forced to change they won't.

"

.

No I don't think your the "bad guy",I think your right, people like stuff, they like holidays and nice cars and 4x4s and boats and cruises on the Caribbean and strawberries in February... There all wonderful things but as with all wonderful things they come at a price and in this circumstance a very very big one.

So yeah there's the light hearted remarks and there's the genuine I couldn't give a shit brigade, that's fair play, your here once, why not enjoy it.... It's a selfish choice but it's a human one!.

All that debate about is it could will it, that was 40 years ago when we were kids, we've all known a long time now that it's bad, it's worse than bad. The weathers fucked, go to India ask locals.. They know it's fucked, it's pouring down when it should be dry it's 40 degrees when it should be 25, it's the driest year on record followed by the wettest year on record , if your ever lucky enough to go to south Florida, you can drive through the sea level rise at 2pm on a glorious hot sunny day... Most people don't think, they just see water coming out of grids on the road... It's salt water, it's coming up the storm drains and flooding roads... Ohhh I did think that was strange .

.

.

So yeah we can all rationalise why were doing bad shit, it's dead easy, Hitler perfectly rationalised rounding up Jews and gassing them...

Humans are great at rationalising our bad habits..

I think that's the first thing we have to change in the process.

"I've got a 4x4. I need seven seats and the people carriers don't take my fancy.

Plus, a small man needs a big car. I love my car. I don't get what the issue is

i don't get the issue either,it's not as if everyone has to pay for our running costs.

And you don't see what the issue is."

Because when I am laying on my death bed my children won't say "Dad remember that time we got 65.4 mpg?"

Wow. That hit a raw nerve!

BTW, I live on planet earth - must be the same one as you, as we only have one.

Don't you think 'the doors' posts really hit the mark brilliantly.

None of us go out in the morning saying 'let's destroy the planet today'. Everyone is just trying to do what they need to do.

And reading through the posts here, isn't the human race fascinating? It comes as second nature to so many of us to say 'Don't look at me. It's not my fault. Look at that person, they are far worse'. Be it 'I don't do many miles, so It doesn't matter what I do'; 'I don't fly, so it doesn't matter what I drive'; 'I need to tow a boat, so I can drive a car that weighs two tonnes'; I shovel shit, so I need a 4x4'; even 'It's not our fault. It's China and America that are the bad guys'.

And the world turns.

And 7,500,000,000 of us just get on with our lives saying 'it's not my fault' and 'it doesn't matter what I do, it makes no difference, don't get at me'

And we emit 36,000,000,000 tonnes of CO2 into out atmosphere every year.

In the UK on average we are responsible for 22kg of CO2 each per day.

And we have to reduce that by 80% in the next 35 years.

And it doesn't seem in the least bit urgent for many.

And it's not just 4x4s. Actually it's a huge section of modern cars.

And in reply to one post: crime against humanity. Funny.

No, not really.
