Splitting the bill

A thread in Swingers chat (and the replies to it) about paying for hotel rooms, got me thinking as to how in everyday life we split bills.

For example if we (as a couple) go for a meal with another couple we always split the bill 50/50 regardless of who has what to eat and drink,I have to say this is normally to our detriment as Mart rarely drinks as he drives and I normally only have a main course where as the other couple could have 3 courses a few drinks and the most expensive thing on the menu!

The problem is I see it as being a bit vulgar to be sorting out who had what even though we really can't afford to subsidise others!

So how do you do things?

Always 50/50.....whatever the individuals have to drink with their meal.

I would find anything else a bit embarassing to be honest.

Agreed. Never start getting into the minutiae of who didn't have a starter or who had an extra glass of wine.

What about where a singleton meets a couple for a meal. Does the bill get split 3 equal ways on the grounds there are 3 people being fed?

Does it matter if one half of the couple is unwaged?

I went out with some new workmates, and when the bill came, I started to work out my share, then realised they normally just split the bill..did I feel like a cheapskate or what!

I'm a 50/50 girl when it comes to meets... I posted in the other thread, my comments are the same here. Although I generally fight with my mates on who's paying... I can't help it. We stopped doing birthday pressies etc. so we have a night out instead so we take turns.

I don't like the squabbling over a bill when you're splitting it, I'd make the same split whether it be a single or a couple.

We are the same as you we always split the bill 50/50.

50/50 ...... But with mr sparkles he would never let me pay for anything no matter how much I said no I will pay half ...... Proper gentleman but at the time I felt proper awful now I dont even bother saying anything cause I no what he will say ...... Bless him

If we invite or are invited then whoever is "the host" pays is ok. I don't have a lot of disposable income so will often host at home and I am a pretty good cook.

I don't eat loads and usually take water rather than anything else but if out with good friends happy to split the bill or if I am flush will offer to pay and they get a turn when they are flush.

Who wants to dine with squabblers.

If it's two of us 50:50

three of us we split it 3 ways.

Or sometimes I've paid then the next time a friend paid.

This Q is to those who say they don't squabble and split 50/50 regardless and haggling is embarrasing. etc etc....

Scenario.

You go out with a good friend. You have no starter. The cheapest dish on the main at £7.50 and no dessert. You have 1 black coffee as you are driving home.

Your freind has .... a wine before choosing. A starter. A side dish. Another wine. A main meal. Another wine. A dessert. An Irish coffee. Another wine.

The bill comes to £52.00.

Still happy ?

Maybe if it's a one off. Maybe if you earn a ton and can pass it off. Of course cos it's a friend... but I bet you think about it on the way home. I bet if they did it twice you 'd stop going out with them.

The 50/50's regardless clan are either a) loaded , b) stupid c) lying d) generous to a fault e ) the offspring of an incredibly stupid man and Mother Theresa.

What would you do if it was a meet ? A first time out with a 'new' friend ? A work acquaintance ?

P.S. If you really ARE that stupid please come out with me xxxx

A couple go out and a single.

That's a 3 way bill.

If it's a two way bill then the couple can share a meal.

I guess I'm a (d) then... well my mum keeps telling me that. I can't help it, I'd far rather be that way inclined than the other way.

I'm not loaded nor stupid but I wouldn't think twice about splitting a bill 50/50 with someone I'd spent the evening with regardless of what we both had to eat/drink. I'm usually driving so it's not often I drink... doesn't make any odds to me.

I have good friends. On a meet... I'd like to say that I'd be different, a bit more careful, but I'd be lying!

I felt ashamed like that just the once. I won't do it. I won't pay for what i can't afford.

I have my own bill.

If it's a set meal and we are all paying a split that's great but when people order stuff I can't afford I won't pay for it .....

three girlfriends and I used to go out for dinner, we all had roughly the same, but one girl insisted quite loudly that as she hadn't had any vegetables, so was she paying her share. She'd moaned about everything that night and we were all pretty pissed off with her. I asked the waiter if he had a spare napkin, took the vegetables from the turren wrapped them up and presented her with them, saying there now you've had your share, pay up or shut up. FFS we were talking £2.00

I had a bunch of so called mates run off at a Pizza Hut once when I was in the loo, luckily I had enough cash to pay for it.

As it was a weekend away and I had things to pay for I laughed it off and asked them all for their share. All but one payed on the spot....he continued to make excuses all day and began avoiding me, so I went back to the digs we shared and nicked his bag and told him he could have it back when he paid me, cheeky fecker.

He soon coughed up then.

If im with just one of my friends its just a case of 50/50 or whoever gets there purse out first.

With a group of friends one of them always works out everyones share. This doesnt matter to me one way or another but since i dont drink anymore found it to my benefit. If ive been out with a guy and another couple or a party that consists of couples only ive never paid, however im with has usually sorted it out.

One night a group of us girls had all put kitty money in for a meal to have before christmas. All put the same in only one woman serioulsy took the piss ordering extra starters, side orders liquor coffess, which wouldnt have been so bad if she hadnt left half of them. She just was never invited again.

Have to be honest I'm with Granny on this one but if THEY didn't offer to pay for their share I would still split the bill 50/50 but never go out with them again!

i usually split the bill even with who i'm going out with.

the only time i've regretted this was when i was the driver and the people i was with decided to celebrate and ordered numerous bottles of champagne. there were twelve of us and the bill was split even.

i found it a tad inconsiderate that i was expected to pay for them to drink champagne....especially as i was driving 4 of them home.

money is not a vulgar issue, talking about it isn't vulgar....expecting others to feed your gluttony, however, is

we're so bloody british sometimes we're afraid to speak out then we hide this under an umbrella of class.

You and two friends are shopping in a large dept store.

You are pushing the trolley. You are all putting household, clothing and toiletry items into the trolley.

You get to the till. Do you split three ways OR pay for your own stuff ?

For my best friend and I, it really does depend who gets their purse out first and who's nearest the machine you put your card in!!

We generally take turns... she spends a lot of time at my place and we just kind of work stuff out on a bit of a random basis... I get the shopping, she does the takeaway etc.

That wouldn't work with everyone right enough... I don't share my trolly with anyone else!
