Saxophones are brass so why aren't they considered to be a brass instrument?

The saxophone (also referred to as the sax) is a family of woodwind instruments. Saxophones are usually made of brass and played with a single-reed mouthpiece similar to that of the clarinet. The saxophone family was invented by the Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax in 1840.

I have researched this extensively, and came to the conclusion "Because it is so"

Musicologists appear a strange bunch. They say 'it matters not the material from which the instrument is made, but rather how the sound is produced'.

Consequently they classify the didgeridoo as a brass instrument

" Wind instruments"

Are either "Brass" eg Trumpets etc ; blown with the lips pursed into the mouthpiece ( and they are " Brass" even when they are made of other metal; eg silver)

And "woodwind" which is all the oboes, clarinets bassoons etc ( blown with a reed) and also includes flutes, piccolos etc They are still "woodwind" , even if they are made from other material such as brass or silver (such as saxophones or flutes)

It's just the way it is.......

Woodwind, the mouthpiece bit goes in between your lips rather than over

I do not have the blow for a trumpet, lol but i can squeak a tune out of a recorder now and then, until people tell me to stop.
