Whole or portion chicken?

How do you buy yours?

I have recently decided to generate less packaging and make more from the food I buy, today I have bought 10 whole chickens and spent the afternoon butchering them, I now have a freezer full of chicken portions ready to go and a pot with 2 back bones and veg making stock (I've frozen the rest to make stock at a later date for soups) I worked out how much I have saved by butchering the birds myself, and it works out to a saving of a whopping £32

Anyone else found ways of saving money without sacrificing quality

I'd be interested to know your costings to be honest (out of interest only, nothing negative). Including the fact you've spent a whole afternoon of your free time outside a working week (which is prime time) to save £32.

I do understand your sentiment though and applaud it.

I can't be bothered butchering a chicken for just breast fillets for dinner. It's a waste of my time, I'd rather pay for someone else to do it as it'd cost less.

I have a greenhouse full of plants grown from seed but the most cost effective must be salad leaves and rocket, minutes to sow every week or so and a constant supply of fresh leaves.

My pricing is biased on buying the same amount of chicken pre portioned against the price I paid for the whole chickens.

And it's a bank holiday weekend with crap weather, so it's a bonus day, I've still got tomorrow, and it takes longer cleaning up, and doing the stock than it does portioning the chickens, I recon once I've been doing it a while, I'll be able to do the 10 chickens in about half an hour

Don't buy chicken, I can't live without chicken, I know it's a stereotype about black men eating fried chicken, but it's one I can't refute, I love it, and I have my own recipe, plus, when I get really down, and I need a pick me up, I'll make brown stew chicken, that cheers me up

My son loves fruit and vegetables, he has had two packets of crisps since his birthday a month ago, but I have to monitor how many portions of carrot sticks he has because he would eat them till there's no carrots left in the house, do I'll try him with pea shoots.

Hey I don't live far from some allotments, there's a thought

I buy it by tonne, well 20kg a time. The local butcher does me roughly 45 big breasts for £70. They are trimmed and dressed so no skin, or bits, no added water.

I bought a vacuum sealer for sous vide but also allows me to vac pac and portion stuff, so season in the vac pacs, freeze some, cook some and meal prep for a week ahead at a time.

Those things will grow in small pots either on the windowsill or in the garden. I've got a bit carried away this year and just counted 40 tomato plants grown from three packets of 99p seeds among other things

I managed to get my hands on a few birds "that had stopped laying" recently... On closer inspection, I'm surprised that they laid at all because they were clearly commercial broiler type hens. Left to free range they killed out at over 7lb each. They were gratis because the people who had them wanted me to dissappear them in the day so they didn't have to think about where they were going. .

YouTube have lots of tutorials if your parents can't show you? I think Gordon Ramsay used to do shows with men in house shares. May be included in those.

The BBC should have a section on batch recipes. I'd just multiply the recipe by a certain number for however many meals my ex wanted while I was away.

I've seen it marginally cheaper without the tenders and with skin and bits on, but with no added water, for free free range chicken, I've not found it cheaper. Normally about £24 for 5kg, and cheaper stuff is £19 per 5kg.

Where have you seen it cheaper ?

If is trimmed, whole breast (including the tenders which i cook for nibble/snacks), and good quality I'd say 27 is still a deal.

I've bought cheap chicken and it's often ends up dry, flavourless, and shrinks down to like half the size, good quality is worth every penny.

Where do you buy your chickens.

I like the little ones from ASDA for £4 for two .....

OR

The small or medium from Aldi.. for around £3.

I portion and freeze most of the time.

If I cook a whole chicken that's at least 4 to 5 portions for me to eat one after the other.

Don't quote recipes i could out recipe the recipe Queen.
