Oh I don't know! Next time you are in the middle of one and everything is wet, just take a second or two to gently blow cold air on the wet tip, if you are giving and see what response you get!

I always thought it was a contraction of 'below' as in a below job being asked for of Victorian prostitutes. I may have my etymology wrong though.

I think of it as more of a blow hobby.

Central

In my days of innocence, I really struggled to understand why anyone would want a blow - it made no rational sense.

If blow jobs really were best done by blowing vacuum cleaners would have a reverse switch.

London and France

"I always thought it was a contraction of 'below' as in a below job being asked for of Victorian prostitutes. I may have my etymology wrong though."

Last I heard, that theory has been discounted; ( the guy who came up with that origin never gave a reference)

Best idea seems to be likening it to playing a wind instrument ; jazz trumpeters still talk of " having a blow"

( there used to be an old euphemism; "playing the pink oboe")

The French word is " piper"; which in old French meant to play a pipe, or whistle.

In German it's "blasen" ( which again is " to blow" eg a trumpet)

It seems almost every language uses a version of their word for blow....

The BBC's mission:

To enrich people's lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain.

I think the forum does an equally good job.

As a reeded woodwind player myself I can pretty much vouch for the fact that the blowing technique is entirely different (although I have had some success applying various tonguing methods from one to the other). But please never call a trumpet a wind instrument, brass involves an entirely different embouchure...

Could the origin of "blow job" be because when the man ejaculates into your mouth, and there is to much, you snort and it blows out of your nose?????

Just asking
