Am I soft or maybe a bit naïve...

Just a point I was considering last night before I fell asleep.

As a person, I fundamentally believe that everyone is a good person - aside from the evil ones, like murderers and Hitler - and I don't hold grudges - say, the people that I have a right to hate or at least really dislike, I just pity them a little bit.

Don't get me wrong though - I do stand my ground, stick up for justice and I'm headstrong!

Though I'm curious about other people's opinions - is having that mind set like seeing the world through rose tinted glasses or is it just a peaceful way to live?

I'd rather approach the world in a positive way than not. I think people are generally good and on the odd occasion that it can be proven people usually do the right thing.

It'd be depressing as hell to assume otherwise.

I think it's neither soft or naive it's emotionally mature in my opinion. Letting go of hate or dislike means it doesn't affect your life.

It isn't always easy if someone has damaged you badly physically or emotionally though.

No, naive in my opinion. I shared your views to my detriment now I've binned the rose tinted specs and assume the worst. My other half thinks that's a sad way to live but it works for me.

I daresay a more balanced outlook is the way to go...but I've yet to find it.

That's the view of my other half.

Hang on how can you fundamentally belive something then instantly dismiss it in the next sentence.

What you have actually described is the disturbing view point.

"I fundamentaly belive people are born good or evil".

Which is so simplistic as to be pointless.

Not even gonna get into the fact you use murder (the legal term) as a juding point.

Some murders may be morally just (to some) while some legal killings which will get you a medal on your chest may have been carried out with the worst of intentions.

I'd agree with this view point

Human psychology is complex and it's morality subjective

Apparent kind people can do selfish things and those that have committed the worst can also be compassionate

An example that confounds my little brain would be I know some exceptionally venomous xenophobic people who are the most kind and generous towards those of their own tribe ?

Strangely, I was discussing this with someone last night. I'm similar to you, and I'm not sure if it's good or if it leaves vulnerable to unnecessary hurt as people constantly take advantage.

Still, I don't think it's possible for me to change in such a huge way.

I think everyone is capable of good and bad things.

I think some people find it inherently easier to be "good" than others. Through a combination of environmental influences, upbringing and genetics.

I follow a parenting philosophy that says that every child wants to be good, they just have to be given the right circumstances in order to do this. I'm not sure exactly how this applies to adults. But I think it does.

I think that people who do bad things are fundamentally very unhappy people.

There's always the idea that what you think is 'bad' is not what I think is 'bad'........

Naive, but that's a good way to be. Once you realise how horrible some people really are then your outlook on humans isn't that great.

I think intent is what truly makes someone evil or not though, rather than the actions themselves.

It is a way of seeing the world that has worked very well for me for the best part of 50 years. I've had times when people disappointed me but never something I couldn't forgive. I think I am happier for seeing the world in that way than I would be if I didn't.

That's true. Sometimes I wonder if it'd just be easier to be a hard nosed cynic though

I see it as 'anything for a quiet life', or not wanting to rock the boat...

I am an introvert but I am also a pleaser so I never want to muddy the waters, as I fear what will happen if I do...

that is unless I feel really strongly about something and then I will speak up

There are some genuinely disturbed and, even, evil people in the world.

I have met a few children that I would put in that bracket.

Mostly people are fine, if a bit wrapped up in themselves. It's to be expected.

It's pretty much the same viewpoint that I hold op. I give people a fair chance, similarly to what I'd appreciate. I'm pretty fixed on not being a mug, so speak out if I suspect something negative is underway. People get experience, take decisions about their actions and change all the time - it follows that others can support them doing this.

Trouble is,is that people aren't generally good or evil. Those are only concepts that have context when applied to a personal point of view.

What most people also forget is that humans are little more than aggressive, territorial pack animals. Despite how much people protest otherwise. Press the right emotional button and any timid shy and rational person can be forced to physically lash out just like any other creature with teeth and claws.

The way I generally see it is...

Most people are mostly harmless but don't trust them to be anything other than slaves to the monkey brain given the right circumstances.
