Since the invention of auto correct, p_edictive txt and spellchecker i think that people have got a tad lazy and the ability to spell basic words is being lost within one generation.

Has the English language not always adapted and changed? Do we speak and spell certain things the way say Shakespeare did? We do not, language is an ever evolving and some of the text type talk we use now may very well become the standard way of spelling

my view is this..

I neither use spell checker nor autocorrect...plus I do all my uni work including note taking and essay writing in longhand before I transfer it to my PC...

if there is ever a word I don't know how to spell/know the exact meaning of then I look it up and I also check the context it needs to be in...

I love words and I enjoy writing and reading so no literacy is not dead ...well not in my house!

I think it has made my spelling and grammar less accurate, as I don't proof read what I have written as much as I did. As a result I make lots of auto-carrot mistakes when posting online. In addition, the use of my phone and tablet have made me less accurate with punctuation. as I'm often trying to respond or write something quickly while mult-tasking.

So I don't think literacy is dead but rather being shaped by the technology we are using. As for my handwriting, well that has gone to pot

Literacy, or certainly the grammar rules involved, are dying, and if this government has its way children will be able to tell you about prepositions, conjunctive clauses and determiners but not be able to string a sentence together.

Hmm. traditionalists(or prescriptive linguists, if you like)would say the reason standards have dropped so much is precisely because this wasn't taught from some time in the mid 80s through to at least the mid nineties.

Therefore the insistence on knowing the mechanics of our language(grammar), and other things such as mode, and when to assume an appropriate register(amongst other things)could only be seen as being of use.

It's may seem that way, but when teaching Y6 children to pass SATS, instead of to be creative and love writing, I'm afraid that if things don't change (the government's constant interference and shifting of goalposts) then we will have a large number of children who are simply not interested in writing, with or without proper grammar or spellchecker.

Aye,I know.i was just stating successive governments' policy regarding the issue(while they pay lip service to creativity- not enough emphasis on creativity and imagination in the mark schemes at all).

I never had a problem being creative with my writing,but that's down to teaching and reading. From this I instinctively knew how to write inventive sentences with half decent vocabulary.didnt properly know what an adverb was until I was in my thirties.didnt do me any harm.

I think that it does help us to use our minds to a great extent, rather than largely having technology to hold the workload as standard. I variously use autocorrect or not, depending upon how I feel, such as when ti_ed.

I've benefited from writing longhand and studies show the great extent that it involves our brains, compa_ed to typed text. I also use speech to text, including in the forum, speaking my comments.

Technology has obviously evolved at a far greater pace than our brains have, so it can easily limit our minds in some ways.

I have always (unknowingly), written in complex sentences and have found it quite a challenge to bring my sentences down to more simple structure. My grammar has never been that good and whilst I put thought and effort into my writing, I have found that being out of academia has resulted in me becoming very lazy in the content of my writing. It's embarrassing at times given the amount of effort I have put into my education.

I seen a Guardian opinion piece saying that it was racist and wrong to correct peoples English. That it was normally white people doing it to non whites.

I find that a bit sad to hear, I don't mind some mistakes but I think we should all reach a certain standard.

As a severe dyslexic it takes me three times as long compa_ed to average to write and read .....

I welcome all tools available.

My thoughts are ....

If we are able to communicate our message, it is interpreted correctly and we receive feedback with accuracy then the spelling is of no consequence unless we are holding a value on a persons character

......of how they spell is a reflection of that character.

Grammar is useful - agreed - yet we could counter the abovementioned argument with your and you're with ur and u r ...

They make the same sound in our heads and so the meaning is conveyed.

As a poster above said - we no longer spell or write with quills as we did in Shakespeare's time and it appears in our future we may use other ways to communicate.

I use text speak where I deem appropriate and when writing a white paper as I have done .... I ensure the appropriate use of language for that forum.... manners for certain sotuations, clothes for certain occasions - it's relative and unfortunately somewhat subjective.

It's fluid ..... Let the language evolve...

The marks / visuals on the screen now are not on walls, caves, bark, parchment, stone or even paper any more ...soon we will communicate via other means....

Why be a Luddite ?

To hold onto a value that serves no purpose - because it was drilled into us that good spellers were better and we want to be better, yes???

We can and are able to communicate without it! Educate in the appreciation of words and structure by all means - doesn't mean we need to behave that way in order to write our own prose.

If we weren't capable of being flexible and adaptable we would still be drawing on cave walls ...
