Supermarket own brands.

on the road to nowhere in particular

Today while perusing the soft drinks aisle in a major supermarket chain, I came across an own brand version of my favourite carbonated soft drink namely cherry pepsimax. I noticed the Tesco Xero cola cherry priced at 55p for 2litres. At that price I had to in the interests of consumer research purchase a bottle.

After tasting it, it does taste a little artificial, even by cola standards. But I would consider purchasing it again.

My problem is this. Does it make me

A- an astute consumer?

B- a total cheapskate?

Confused now

My dad worked for a well known company who make an every day food. They also made the asda smart price product. Exact same item just in different packaging and about a third of the price of the branded one.

If you like it, buy it.

I'd buy store brand stuff like bleach, disinfectant wipes, sugar, etc., but I'm a creature of habit with certain brands. Plus a few of my clients have household brand products which I like to buy in order to support them.

Yep. A tomato is a tomato. A tin of chopped tomatoes has chopped tomatoes in it. There are no super duper tomatoes they use for more expensive cans. Yet people pay twice or more for better artwork on the unimportant bit (ie the tin) that ends up in the bin.

For the op. If you like it, buy it. You won't be outcast from society by buying the 20p cheaper .

Own brands have a tendency to have more bad things like sugar in them. At least that's what I found. But it only makes you a curious consumer

Different tomatoes have different levels of sweetness and save adding extra sugar in things like tomato pasta sauce. Certain brands are consistent, and taste tests always prove this.

Some foods like tinned tomatoes i only like the cheapest.. but beans i only like branston but bulk buy when half price for 4 tins!

if aldi can do cola very similar to the named brand, shows how much profit pepsi etc make, there was a feature on watchdog years ago they tested 6 washing powders supermarket own brand was just as good as named brands, you are paying for the bull they put out when advertising.

I have to say when it comes to cola, nothing comes near the top two. Even virgin cola had a nasty aftertaste.

With other products I quite often give the own brands a try. The Kirkland range is often as good as the brand leader. They don't do a cherry pepsimax version though

The only fizzy I buy is aldis diet lemonade which is less than 20p. I just use it as a mixer. Not really a big 'pop' fan.

Kirkland is fantastic for certain things, better than branded goods, like kitchen towel and foil. Just a shame we haven't one closer to shop more regularly.

It has iron and other bits added in large quantities ( something to do with milk being a tannin , and counteracting iron content, so Kellogg's fortify the cereals after baking) . He stated that own brand cereals don't have the same level of iron and other vits. He was advising this in a medical capacity, so can only assume he knows what he's talking about.

sorry but Kellogs are one of the worst cereals for added sugars and other things that arent good for you being added tot heir products. thats why a lot of people dont like own brand cereals because they arent as sweet
