This is a question for mums

I don't want to get into details but I'll be meeting an old friend whom I haven't been in contact with for three years in the next few days.

She had a baby last month and I'm looking for gift ideas for her and the baby. According to a friend, my ideas are rubbish

She reckons she'll have loads of baby clothes, photo albums, photo frames etc.

So what gifts did you get (for yourself and baby) that you loved or would have appreciated receiving looking back?

It's always the baby that gets the gift.

New mums often feel a bit unsexy and left out . So why not arrange a pamper and photo session for her but where she can have some photos with baby too.

I'm sure a good photographer will be happy for someone to go with her to help look after baby.

My friend arranged for me to have a spa day when my daughter was around 2 months old. She took care of her while I got pampered. It was bliss.

It's nice when the mum is remembered. Babies get tonnes of stuff.

You could maybe arrange for her to have a facial/massage and offer to mind the baby?

Ok, maybe not offering to baby sit, but a voucher to get some pampering. It'll make her feel good.

Ok, maybe not offering to baby sit, but a voucher to get some pampering. It'll make her feel good.

How about you make up a wee hamper/parcel kinda thing. With prosecco, chocolates, a couple of bath bombs, face masks etc. Just stuff for her?

I agree but she was never into pampering or spas etc. Or as a wrecked new mum is this something she'd likely be into now?

What kind of person is she? New babies are incredibly time consuming and sometimes a gift of pamper products will just add to any pressure a new mum is feeling, some days I didn't get round to dressing myself until the afternoon a face pack was an impossible dream.

Unoriginal I know but for her I would suggest vouchers that she can use when she feels ready and for the baby something to wear but in a larger size as they grow out of things so quickly.

I remember a day when our son was about two weeks old and his sister was 2 years old. It was about 11am and although I was actually dressed the curtains were still drawn and the living room floor was just covered with toys. A friend knocked on the door with a tin of cakes, came in, took no notice as she stepped over toys in the semi darkness and made us both a cup of tea to drink amidst the mess with the cakes. That was one of the best presents I had

Made me chuckle, but yes quite probably.

I discovered a never before desire for pampering after becoming a mum. I think it's because to some extent you feel you lose your identity because baby gets (and needs) so much attention time and energy.

A nice gift set from Lush.

It's for the mum, not the baby. It's not flash or inappropriate if you're just reconnecting. It's something that she can use to feel nice when she has half an hour to do nothing. And even when not being used it will smell nice.

I asked same question here a few months ago, (I was going down the spa idea also)

What I eventually got her was 6 * 2 hour house cleans + ironing + washing

She loved it so much, anyone who asks her what she wants now, the answer is a house clean + ironing

Can I veto a blanket? Lovely gift but she probably has enough already (sorry!!)

I do highly recommend Sophie the Giraffe - it's perfect for when they're teething & very easy for them to hold. I had 3 dotted around & they were a godsend!!! You can get them from Mothercare or online.

Does your/her local cinema do mum & baby screenings? If so, maybe a voucher

If she is breastfeeding, a keepsake encapsulated in resin and made into Jewellery makes an unusual gift. 'Mom's own milk' do vouchers, Google them.

Also there's the jewellery made from hand or foot imprints of baby that are pretty special?

Or a colourful wrap carrier to give her hands free time whilst still comforting the baby? x

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

The last two of my friends who had babies I bought some lovely Clarins stuff. Moisturisers etc. Just so they could pamper themselves. They were so grateful as all the attention and prezzies were for the baby. They felt invisible.

A baby blanket. I received one from Gap and I still have it 21 years later. Given to me when my son was born.

For your friend maybe something simple. Flowers, plant for the garden so it will last, a book that you enjoy that's about friendship, a nice scarf.

Hope your reunion goes well.
