A Man's watch in my opinion is his main or only piece of jewellery where as a woman usually has rings necklaces etc.

I think you can tell a lot about a Guy from the watch he wears. Bit like you can with a Guys shoes.

What watches do you own and what watches would you like to own ?

I have a Mickey Mouse watch. It is excellent. It tells the time. Mickey's big hand is on the ... Oh, you get the idea.

I'd like a Rolex, been wanting one for a year or two now but keep spending the cash on my car instead

I like a few of the tags but if I'm spending a few thousand quid on a watch id want it to hold some value, where as you can pick a tag up for a few hund_ed.

And just for what it's worth my shoes are a tatty pair of vans

I'm pretty open minded when it comes to what watches say about someone.

But I suppose some people may have preconceived ideas about watches.

let's say for instance some people may say a certain model of Rolex would be associated with a dodgy used car salesman?

That's only an example and not my view of course.

If you want something that holds it's value, forget a Rolex. Have a look at jeagar Le Coultre, or IWC. These are amazing and hold their value for decades.

They only make a handful of certain models as you probably know.

It's not about the money value for me, having flown on the beautiful white lady in 2003 just before her last flights it's a special memory for me, gone from the skies nut never forgotten.

I like some of the Russian mechanical watches, I have a mechanical Poljot chronograph and recently got an Orient pilot watch. The watch I would love is an Omega speedmaster. I'm not a person who continuously looks at their watch checking the time, it's an accessory on your wrist. I suppose it's a bit of bling on your wrist

I wear an omega seamaster bond limited edition first edition of the bond watches only 10,007 made to commerate the 40th anniversary of the bond movies worn it daily since the day my wife bought it for me apart from a dalliance with an Apple Watch that quite quickly I got bo_ed with wouldn't part with the omega for anything and I bought my wife the ladies omega seamaster and a vintage omega dress watch she wears on special occasions

I once borrowed my brothers Rolex for around 3 hours before taking it off in a club to wash my hands left it on the sink & walked out..never did get it back good job I have a very forgiving brother lol

If you want something that holds it's value, forget a Rolex. Have a look at jeagar Le Coultre, or IWC. These are amazing and hold their value for decades.

GMT Master bought in 2001 for £2350 now worth £4000+. Ladies Datejust Steel and gold, diamond dot dial, cost £2000 s/h not long ago, now £2500-£3000. Any mechanical swiss watch will hold value. A Rolex is iconic, most others look much like any argos crap even when worth thousands.

A tag heuer formula 1, and two rolexes, one of which is real lol

My dad used to say that his Rolex was mine when he died, and it was a long running joke because it was such a bad fake lol

For my 30th birthday he said that I shouldn't have to wait for such a beautiful watch, and he handed me a watch box, with the original version of his fake one, but I love the fake more, it means so much to me.

I have a plan to buy my kids a quality watch each for their 18th

I've been toying of getting a genuine vintage LCD watch from the 70's the ones with dark _ed face that light up with the time when you press the button.

Some of them fetch big money now.

I think the next generation of smart watches will be where i jump in.

The current samsung gear s2 classic is very nice but the app suport jist isnt there yet.

I like the maps feature though.

Handy for when navigating a new town on foot just to glance at a watch rather than a phone.

Hopefully the 3rd generation ones will be sorted

Not a fan at all of those watches that are so big and obviously expensive ( or trying to look expensive.

I have a very nice Hugo boss watch, bought for me by my late mother for my 21st birthday... It was fairly expensive, but not thousands... It's descreet, classy, but only those that can see class appreciate it.

It doesn't let me dive to 1000ft, nor does it tell the temperature in Mumbai.. It performs it's function perfectly. Any more is just arrogance

Hubby has a Dutch "Van der Gang" if he rolls in d*unk and takes it off, I sometimes hide it and amuse myself while he try's to remember if he lost it in the morning, and wonders why it's in his shoe again, he had to wait a year for it to be made

As we have some experts in, can I go slightly off topic and ask the best way to sell a quality watch? I have a longines bought as a long service thingamajig. Loved the thought, never really liked the style. As it costs 80quid per battery change as it always requires some service.. I think it's time to part with it.

I know it's not one for the watch snob, but acurist did some very classy watches for the money, I had one as a teenager, when I started to care about how I was presenting myself, I wore it for my first big job interview along with y first quality suit, and to this day I swear I got the job because of how well dressed I was compa_ed to the other candidates

Did anybody else ever buy an interno 8 shirt? I've got 3 of them that no longer fit me lol, but the cut out cuff for your watch made for a comfortable watch wearing experience

I inherited an Omega Speedmaster. The watch has sentimental value but its actual monetary worth is far beyond anything I'd consider paying myself. For the first few months I had it, for some reason I thought it was kinetic, and spent a stupidly long time shaking it like a furiously masturbating chimp only to find the seconds dial stopped again after a minute or so.

I enjoy wearing it though, mainly because it is so ill-fitting of the rest of my attire. I like to imagine meeting the Cumberbatch incarnation of Sherlock, his mind surrounding me in CGI question marks, as he tries to deduce how the timepiece behemoth came to sit on the wrist of a late twenties male otherwise dressed in skater shoes and a tatty hoody.

In much the same way cars are for getting from A-B, and phones are for making telephone calls (oh and perving on t'internet) I see a watch as a device for telling the time.

Therefore no need for multiple fancy pants top of the range £15,000 jobs here, just one run of the mill mid-range timepiece which, when I look at it, tells me the time. Job done

You cant tell anything from a guys watch or car....I will explain.

Its all relative to how much money you have and if you like flash watches and cars.

If someone didn't have a rolex or a Mercedes then came into money then he may want to purchase such things but he is still the same person who didn't have them previously .So therefore the question is flawed.....however..... you can tell a lot more about someone that asks such questions as if it maketh the man or not.

I have 3 currently, the one I wear day to day is a piece of cheap crap from Argos, cost about a tenner, but it functions, and I keep breaking watches I wear to work, so its no loss if I break this one.

I also have a cheap fob style watch on a chain that I bought in Paris, liked the case design and bought it on a whim, wasn't very expensive, about 20 quid, but my son has already made me promise it to him when I'm gone... claims its "cool as fuck"!

And the third is a gift from my daughter, which I have worn once, I'm terrified of loosing it or breaking it, but I have promised her I'll start to wear it, although I need two links taken out of the bracelet and a new battery too... she bought it on her first proper trip away from mum and dad to Germany, wont tell me the price but says it wasn't cheap... I'm guessing around 200 euros.

They can have sentimental meaning as you know. I don't think watches will ever become a thing of the past personally.

If you want something that holds it's value, forget a Rolex. Have a look at jeagar Le Coultre, or IWC. These are amazing and hold their value for decades.

I bought my ex a Breitling after a good quarter at work. He never wore it, shame really, but it's something I guess he can hand down should he have children in the future.

I bought my current partner a Mondaine as I love them for casual watches. Timeless design. He'll get something nicer, but we've only been together a year so he'll have to put up with me for a bit longer.

I apreciate lots of people just see a watch as a way to tell the time but I've always been fascinated by them. I love the engineering that goes into a good watch and attach a lot of sentimental value to them.

I have two truly dear friends who I love and each wears a watch I gifted them as I would rather see them being worn than sitting in a drawer.

It means a lot to me and my mates that both watches are ones I wore for maybe ten years before passing them on.

Might sound a bit sad but a watch is a very personal item to me. Could well be as OP suggests, guys often don't wear other jewellery to get attached to.

Have silver hunter from 1899 circa-: Interesting history to this watch guys name Ingraved inside who came from another family from our village from 1907 other etchings inside relate to repair from 1915 only have one clue How it came into our family watches like this carry some weight but from the ring that held the fob chain it was nearly worn through showed how much wear was used, in all a nice local social history something you can,t buy as its been probabily in our family around 100 years... also a swiss ladies silver wrist watch wind up probabily cyclinder movement with original strap from 1929

otherwise a 1975 wind up gold plated sekonda I,m wanting to take the strap off this for a leather one the metal one does not grip properly now.

And a limit which after 21 years I think the quarzt movement has just given up this last day bought from asda excellent little watch.

I'd quite like a Tag, but almost without exception (presents from others) every watch I have ever bought and wear is an Accurist. Well made, reliable and some of them look like they should have cost a lot more...!

I almost feel naked without a watch on, and have actually returned home a few times on the way to work after forgetting to put one on.... my boss is the same though, so all I do is point to the watch and he just nods and laughs!

While I do appreciate an expensive watch, I'd be too worried about damaging or losing it - give me a £150-200 Accurist and I am happy enough to wear it day in, day out...
