They were bought for £1 from Phillip Green, they investors thought they would get some money from a restructure they did a while ago. The money didn't appear and now 11,000 jobs are under threat....I feel for the work force who may not have a job soon.

I would never shop in bhs as they do seem old fashioned and don't cater for my tastes. I do however make a conscious decision to buy from the high street rather than online to keep people in employment. I also never use a self service checkout. We can all do a little to help the economy and employment.

BHS has been going down hill for years, the quality of their clothes are shocking, much of it I would liken to a market stall. It's a shame that so many will lose their jobs as well as the High Street changing so much for the worse.

We used the automated service in the post office the other day and afterwards I said we should have queued at the counter because they will be collecting stats on how many people use which method. The problem was we were in and out while people who had joined the queue before we got there were still waiting.

It's progress I'm afraid, I'm not saying its a good thing but I think it might be inevitable. There was a time when lots of us refused to shop in chain stores on the High Street because it was doing the small independents out of business.

A little premature.

Administration has not been filed.

Sports Direct still in discussions to buy some of the 164 stores .

With debts of 1.3 billion - 500 million or so pensions deficit - it admittedly doesn't look good for Monday morning.

The original comment in this thread about "look forward" to the clearance sale..... really quite poor !!

Supermarkets are the main reason why a lot of the high st is going , one trip to get everything you need , we all lead busier lives than our parents used to , it's the convenience of the places , food , electrical goods , clothes all under one roof , whereas in years past you'd need to visit half a dozen shops to get your shopping it can all be done under the one roof now , throw in Internet shopping and the decline of the high st is hardly surprising

Yes...the supermarket's are part of this. Just been to the states for two weeks and it is all out of town malls and big players. There is actually very little competition.... It is only big players... Walmart and public as supermarket's are the only two I saw throughout Florida. Hundreds of KFC..dink in doughnuts etc....not an independent shop in sight unless it was very specialised. It is where we are heading... And it isn't good.

If sports direct take it over they will strip mine the company for assets and the prime store locations - the rest will go as well most of the workforce. The pension fund gap will go unfilled and the staff will suffer.

Or it goes into administration, and the only change is all the workforce go.

Absolute fugazi.

I feel for the workers who are losing out, but I don't think you can blame the likes of asda and tesco, bus just didn't move with the times, it became a dinosaur of the high street, and in today's retail market, you can't rest on your brand name to keep the tills ringing.

If you look at bhs vs primark primark are selling clothes that are relevant, not necessarily of the same quality, but most of their stuff is out of fashion before it's too torn up to wear, but bhs is trying to cater to a generation that is dwindling, and think that each generation becomes clones of the one before, it doesn't work like that.

this.... its the primarks, matalans and the supermarkets that started selling clothes that did it in for BHS... they got squeezed...

remember they use to be the cheaper end before they have now been outpriced....

and as for sports direct.... they will just strip it for the city centre locations....

Town centres won't exist as we know them today in ten years the internet has killed the concept.

Strangely enough the modern internet shopping will probably reverse town centres back how they were a hundred years ago.

Small niche industry shop below with house above.

Office space and retail space is vastly under subscribed, you really can't let either very easily at the moment.

The only thing shifting is flats and commercial space

You cant blame other shops for them going down the pan, the reason lots of the old stores have suffered is because the new ones sell cheap crap made by child or very poorly paid labour, everyone wants to pay a pittance for stuff these days so they go to primark and buy a vest for £2 and then complain when its their job that goes, too many say they want british made goods but dont actually do it, most of the problems go back to the days of the 70's when the management of British industry was very poor and the unions went on strike every two minutes, the UK was fat and lazy and the rest of the world took over

Yes all quite true its all getting convience shopping now, even our local nat west bank moved premises to another location a few miles away which was due to more people doing on line banking than actually going into the bank so now our local post office helps our here, If marks and spencers go,s under some people won,t have a clue where to turn I know george from asda won,t be able to help when looking for a pair of cords like blue harbour there are just certain things you can,t get ask anyone that to see all this happening in a lifetime is a real eye opener but yes times are changeing faster now than ever before its this change that has brought us out of the past but call me nostalgic or what I,m starting to miss the old things that we all took usually so much for granted.

I think you will find most of the old shops are/were selling the same "cheap crap".

BHS demise is more to do with the retailer/brand not adapting and changing to how the consumer wants to buy the product.

The neo-Con's wet-dream smash and grab investors have bled this company dry, leaving £millions of shortfall in their pensions, amongst other debts. They should be forced to repay every last pound, lose knighthoods as well as face criminal action, should it be found.

It is 100% wrong for the UK taxpayer to have to foot the bill, whilst £millions have been siphoned from this business in recent months.
