The fact a man (or men) was able to inspire and effect a whole language, the ability to swing from high art to vulgar jokes. And there's something pleasing about sharing this incredible body of work with everyone that shares this language.

A comp next to an estate.

As for the quote, dunno, maybe the rhythm? It's a fun use of language to day a simple thing, and most likely it one of the very few that have stuck in my dyslexic brain.

I can understand people not liking it, but "pointless" was a bit harsh.

That's why I like King Lear so much. It deals with the issue of how to deal with an ageing parent, their assets, how it is bestowed onto the children and the consequences of those actions, which is still very relevant today.

On my bucket list to read a whole Shakespeare play and get it. Dropped A level English Lit as one of the books was Richard the Third. It made no sense to me at all.

Went to see it at the Old Vic...left as clueless as I arrived. I remember a Blackadder sketch where Edmund meets Shakespeare and whacks him on behalf of future generations of school children who have to study his work.

If you've got an afternoon or an evening free in London then go to the Globe Theatre. Do NOT take the posh seats. Take the yard tickets. They use the crowd in front as part of the stage and you get involved in the production. Sometimes they even use the crowd as a prop in market/fair scenes! Magic!

There's been quite a few Shakespeare plays I have NEVER read before seeing it performed there and I've picked up what's going on in less than 7 minutes.

And even if you don't like the play, or its crap weather, then you can sod off to the pub. You've only lost a fiver for the ticket. Cheapest afternoon/evening out in London you can get.

"who needs sequels when the originals are still going after 400 years."

Spot on.

Also, according to Shakespeare online, he contributed over 1700 words to the English language. I'm not 100% sure I even know 1700 words.

Well done Mr Shakespeare! If you were still, about i'd definitely let you have a go on my Mrs.

We are off to see A Midsummer Night's Dream this summer in Stratford Upon Avon.

If you watched Shakespeare Live last night, Ian McKellen, Judy Dench, David Tennant and Paapa Essiedu stood out to me.

It's not for everyone, as many writers aren't, but he has certainly stood the test of time for many of us.

He did sequels

Julius Caesar part 2: Anthony and Cleopatra

Loves Labours Lost part 2: Loves Labours Won

Henry IV Part 2

Henry VI Parts 2 and 3

Some of his plays were a bit meh (Twelfth Night, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Measure for Measure), but overall the Bard did pretty good.

I'm not a huge fan of Shakespeare either, I can appreciate some of his writing and his huge contribution to the English language but I'm not sure it should be compulsory to enjoy his work just because it's the done thing and I'll be darned if I'm going to pretend. I'm not all that keen on Latin either but my knowledge of that and Shakespeare has and does help even now 40+ years after leaving school.

What I find quite strange is that so many people seem not to find Shakespeare interesting, so many were bored by him at school, so many claim never to have been able to understand his work and yet so many use his Words in everyday phrases, perhaps they don't even realise, but none the less he is and always has been part of our culture and language, love him or loathe him, I don't think he will be going anywhere, anytime soon

Some of the language in the modern world is outdated, however the modern versions/phrase interpretation exsist because he contributed them, his work as stood the test of time because it plays to basic emotional states of being we all experience and therefore relate to eg love, jealousy etc

Love him or hate him you can't deny that he knew how to write to relate to an audience and write it well

I like his work.

Due to the language I found I could not understand the plots when I was younger.

He lives on because of the era in which he wrote. No more. And of course because he is studied in Universities and lauded by both the knowledgeable and non knowing.

I tend to see at least one of his works each year. I have lost count of the number of interpretatioins of Macbeth I have seen.

This year I will visit Chester Open Air theatre yet again. I have tickets for 'As you like it' in July. However it's a 'day out' , 'fun' , a picnic , and close up , live theatre just as much as it is a play be The Bard.

P.S. Take it from me.

The average 15 year old today, knows more words than even existed in Shakespearian times.

He never had a lot of competition now - did he?

He's just some bloke that wrote popular plays with great twists and human darkness and frivolity.

It isn't a mark of high intelligence or high culture to enjoy Shakespeare.

He's the Corry writer of his day. POPULAR culture.

He's brilliant. I agree forcing him down the throats of some kids is totally counter productive.

Unless we can get a change in teaching styles and assessment. Then new life could be breathed into study of him.

Fucking can't stand Romeo though, the irritating little prick.

Hate the cliche that he's be writing Eastenders. NO he fucking wouldn't. I'm thinking more Jimmy McGovern or for Ken Loach, or Ianucci perhaps type stuff if for television/film. But he'd probably still be writing for the theatre as his stuff is so dense with ideas and feeling and plotting. So yeah, I suppose some series or other.

He that outlives this day, and comes safe home, will stand a tip toe when this day is named, and rouse him at the name of Crispian.

He that shall live this day, and see old age, will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours, and say "Tomorrow is Saint Crispian."

Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars, and say "These wounds I had on Crispin's day."

Old men forget, yet all shall be forgot, but he'll remember, with advantages, what feats he did that day.

Then shall our names, familiar in his mouth as household words—

Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester be in their flowing cups freshly remembered.

This story shall the good man teach his son, and Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by.

From this day to the ending of the world, but we in it shall be remembered.

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers, for he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother, be he ne'er so vile.

This day shall gentle his condition, and gentlemen in England now aney shall think themselves accursed they were not here, and hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks, that fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Depends on the school/choice of study we were taught the linguistic significance of it. We also looked at that while studying Chaucer (whom I prefer) but I chose to take English literature not just English

Depends on the school/choice of study we were taught the linguistic significance of it. We also looked at that while studying Chaucer (whom I prefer) but I chose to take English literature not just English"

Agree wholeheartedly. I've always loved books, reading them and discussing them, even throughout my time at Secondary. We were made to study him from, what, the age of about 12 and he always, broadly speaking, didn't really turn me on(apart from when the teacher guided us to talk about context and stuff which removed the ball ache of wading through the text) until at least A level, and then at university and beyond.

He is amazing, but unless you have someone gifted at unpicking him for you then students/readers are really missing out big time.
