Am I crazy?

Jump to newest

I have noticed on several occasions now, that I do not enjoy eating food as much with my off hand when compared to my dominant hand. Its not just about the discomfort of using my left hand but it also appears to taste worse than normal.

The difference in taste for some of the food is so big, that I no longer take any enjoyment from eating it. Ice creams and peanuts for example.

Anyone else feels like this or am I just plain crazy ?

Makes sense psychologically. Eating with your off hand feels familiar, leaving an impression on your general mood which dilutes down into everything else you do.

For the same reason people find drinking certain wines form different shaped glasses makes a difference. I find drinking coca-cola from one of those little glass bottles tastes better than a can or plastic bottle. Dr Pepper tastes better from a can.

It can't taste that different.

Most people prefer glass to metal or platic to drink from .....it's less tainted on our tongue and lips but the DRINK is exactly the same.

Eating with your left hand isn't as pleasant but the food tastes the same really.

Hence why I said it's a psychological thing.

Certainly different, but as mentioned just one of those psychological things

Food can certainly taste different depending on what you are listening to; there is plenty of good research on this.

" just use the dom hand - "

Its sometimes occupied that's why I am reluctantly using the left one.

@Granny grumpet, it really does taste significantly different for some types of food. Like someone mentioned, its probably a psychological thing but I still notice it all the same.

When eating peanuts I literally don't enjoy them nowhere near the same but for sandwiches it makes no difference.

This is purely for food though. Drinking wise I don't notice a difference between can, plastic or glass.

Talking of sandwiches, do you find the shape makes a difference?

Small 1/4 squares last the longest.

Small 1/4 triangles taste the best.

1/2 triangles fill you up the most.

1/2 squares are finished the quickest

Uncut slab tastes the worst.

I love eating food with my left hand.

It tastes so much better than eating it with my wrong, I mean right hand

Erm...no ? I never eat triangles, when I make sandwiches I don't cut the bread to different shapes, too time consuming.

@miss innocent, I see you're as crazy as me, well a bit more because your left handed .

I should probably become ambidextrous and see if that will help

The left hand is 'controlled' by the right hemisphere of the brain, and vice versa. The right hemisphere is associated with emotion, depression etc and the left is associated more with logic. It could be that using your less dominant (I'm assuming left) hand activates a part of the brain that isn't usually associated with eating. It could be affecting how you perceive taste in some way. These two hemispheres are connected by the corpus callosum, and in instances where it was removed, you'd see patients trying to strangle themselves with their left hand and protect themselves with the right hand.

It may also be that using your less dominant hand requires more concentration on something that usually doesn't require active concentration, and that may influence your perception of flavour.

I am in total agreement with you there.

Tea tastes better from a china cup too.

Agreed, although it tastes just as good and feels more calming if it's in a huge mug as well.

The points I made about materials and their tainting of taste and the physical differences of using the non dominant hand were NOT psychological.

I wasn't trying to diminish your far far far far far far superior contribution.

If you're using your knife and fork correctly you will always be using your left hand to put food into your mouth....

Right back at ya. It can't taste different. It's the same stuff , same mouth.

I accept your experience is imparied and you don't find it as enjoyable but the taste can't be changed.

I wonder if you have some sort of synesthesia going on.

I don't do that though. For some reason I eat like the Americans - I use my knife and fork t cut things up then transfer the fork to my right hand and eat it all with that. I'm not sure why I do this, and I know it drives my Mum mad.

I think eating Chinese food with chopsticks is a good example, I could never get the hang of it.

If something is more difficult to do it stands to reason you won't enjoy it as much.

That just sounds like over complicating the eating process
