The answer is here...

More or Less - Celebrity deaths

A number of people have asked the team if more famous people have died this year compared to other years. It's a hard one to measure - but we have had a go at some back of the envelope calculations with data from Who's Who and BBC obituaries. Is the intuitive feeling that more people have died this year misplaced?

Maybe because we live in a more connected age so news is faster and reaches more people. Also in this multi media age more people become famous and therefore more newsworthy

The death rate is the same as it's always been.

One per person.

Good call Joe - More or Less is a great show. Missed this one but my immediate thoughts are that there's nothing at all that is exceptional atm, as tragic as things are.

I haven't given it a lot of thought or any research but my gut feeling is that after Bowie died we had a this surge of social media led false sentiment where people who had never mentioned Bowie I years and couldn't name a single album were claiming to be devastated at losing such an important figure in their lives.

Maybe through a desire for some kind of vicarious coolness.

And in responce, the press gets far more gooey eyes than usual over the passing of anyone with a public profile.

Not trying to be insensitive.

Maybe its because ...those of us who were bought up with seeing these legends ... the impact of losing them has shocked us ... as in the age of Telly .... radio .....etc

We feel we have lost a lot of people. ...

Many of the younger generation dont know who the hell they are ........unless they have been in a harry potter film

Very good point. In 50 yes time when the current crop of one hit wonders and reality to based celebs start popping their clogs will anyone have a clue who they used to be?

It's the one thing in life that's guaranteed...death...when and where may differ from person to person.

"Celebrity is so easily bestowed nowadays."

Quite a lot of those who died last year earned it properly, though.

Is there a test I can take?
