Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I rarely use my phone camera as its pants, and have a Sony Cyber-Shot. Its a few years old, but takes decent pics, apart from in the dark. I recently went to a concert and most of the pics came out shit (the same happen with my phone camera coincidentally).

I'm going on a very special holiday next year and I want a camera that actually takes some decent photos. I have a limited budget but there must be a decent point & shoot camera that takes decent pics in low light.

Any advice gratefully received.

Mcr

Pictures at a concert are not ideal to use a judge, lots of light sources and other flashes to cause issues to mention distance.

I always liked the Canon Ixus and Powershot ranges, but Panasonic are doing well too..Currently there are some really nice rugged cameras which are begging for holiday usage.

What sort of money are you thinking ? A rough budget would probably help most people give a suggestion including myself.

I would prefer sub £200 but know you get what you pay for, so will go as high as £250. Or should I just wait until its time to update my phone and get one with a good camera on?

I wouldn't buy a camera for just one special occasion as it'd just gather dust. I'd get a phone which I'd use daily and make sure it has a decent camera if I'm getting an upgrade anyway.

You could pick up something like a Nikon d5100 second hand with a 1.8 fstop lens for very little these days. Lots of people will swear by Canon or nikon but unless you are a pro it will make no difference.

Basically if you want to take low light photos you need something with a low fstop. In around the 1.8 mark. There are countless point and shoot cameras on the market but a cheap dslr with a 50mm or 70mm lens will do all you need. Keeping in mi d if you take more of an interest you can alway buy a good zoom lens like an 18/200 VR but thats still about 500 quid. Pretty much depends on your budget

Rugeley

Had a Panasonic TZ60 for a year and it's the best compact camera I've owned.

On a side note, my friend has the new Samsung s7 and the low light shots are amazing. I'm using an s5 and I'm pretty happy with that. Go to Flickr and you can search photos by the phone make and model. That will give you a good idea of what phones withing your budget are capable of. Hope that helps

I've yet to see a phone that takes a good concert photo though. But then if you fancy spending on a good dslr. I'm not sure you'd wanna carry that around a concert either.

Just reminded my about the 100m final at the 2012 Olympics. And the idiots filming the race on their tablets. You have to wonder why they would want to do that

I have a S4 and the low light shots are crap! Can phone cameras improve so quickly?

Canon Ixus is a great instant Camera which provides great pics

and so much easier to carry than my Canon EOS 50D
