...Up on the Downs

Virgin just texted me to ask if I'd spent over £1000 in a cycle shop......nooo!

Thieving buggers - I wonder how they got the info, I never use that card online, it's just sitting in my room!

We've all been there! Deep breath. Cancel card and get on to them to get money back. Check all other transactions. Sit down, have a cup of tea and put it down to experience!! Xx

Happened once before, I'm not bothered - I think it's some random method sometimes, as I say I'm not using the card at all.

Central

There is potentially a bigger problem where many of us may be subject to lower value transactions that may not initiate phone calls etc, and we may not notice them upon our statements: some people don't even check their statements.

.

When and where was the last place you used the card?.

Who's got access to the card?.

Do you shed your financial paperwork?.

Virgin? Do you do your paperwork online and is your computer secure ie virus, worms, malware, key readers?

Only place I have used it is Amazon last year. I have no paper statements and I never look at the account online either so who knows. As far as I knows it's all secure - no-one else has access.

Mea Culpa. And those contactless cards seem to me to be a bit of an open invitation.

It's OK, Virgin do it all, they spotted it immediately, the pattern was wrong. It never even showed on my account.

I have had it happen a few times to me, once on my debit card which took months to reappear in my account.

Are you sure it was a text from Virgin? Did it ask you to click a link in the text?

Some scam texts/ phone calls say they are from your bank but it's a scam to get your details when you click the link etc.

Not meeting

Contactless cards worry me. I know only smaller amounts but a number of transactions soon adds up!

Hope you get it sorted quickly - my dad has 2 cards. 1 for online only & 1 for in shops. His online card was cloned & used in a shop to buy £3k of office furniture but the bank spotted it straight away.

Eliminate the other possibilities and your left with your conclusion no matter how unlikely it appears!.

Ooh good point - I only had to answer yes or no to 'were they my transactions' and then they phoned me, but of course it could have been be a scammer phoning. Trouble is going through security you have to give THEM a lot of bits of information, even if not a whole password, so I just phoned to double check.

Just now they offered me the opportunity to add a memorable phrase to my account which THEY have to quote to me if they phone, so I have done that - seems a good idea.

I'd call Virgin on a known phone number and check. x
