£25 for new wiper blades

hiding from cock pics.

A disappointing list of MOT fails has just been received, including £7.50 for a bulb, £25 wiper blades...plus vat.

I think I'm going to do those two things themselves and let the garage take care of them all complicated stuff. That does seem a lot a lot of money though.

Awaiting a quote from another garage just now!

Buy online, do the change yourself. It's wiper blades, it's easily done.

You know you don't have to let them replace those things. Just phone then and say you'll be bringing them along with you and fit them when you pick the car up. The garage will see they've been replaced and work and will issue the mot cerificate.

A tip for the next MOT; don't take the car to a garage that does repairs as well, most will find some way of charging you for something.

There are places that just do MOT's, council owned I think.

Go to any motor factor shop and you will find them a lot cheaper.

There can be two different sizes so check before you buy

Easy to fit.

I also need a new anti roll bar link as it has too much play in it. I think the garage might have to do that then I'm not sure what it is yet...

Halfords is quick and easy but when I needed a rear window wiper blade they didn't yet stock that one so had to go to the dealer and thought they would be expensive - the guy popped out and put it on for me and was cheaper than Halfords

Google is your friend, so look up what it is on your car and you'll find some link to how much it will cost or other advise.

Wipers will cost around a fiver from most auto spares shops, £25 is a complete rip off and bulbs will be a quid or so. Take the parts in and give them a cheeky wink and they might fit them for you

.

I'd start at changing the wiper blades and work your way up, if you struggle with wiper blades as that's the easiest job, maybe think about using a garage

I once owned a Citroen that took about 3 or 4 hours to change a set of front bulbs on.... And I'm a fairly good diy mechanic

Depending on which bulb which car they can be a real pain to change.

Find a good local independent mechanic and they will sort MOT prep for you. Main dealer labour costs only make sense for a car under warranty.

The amount of cars that fail just because of a wiper blade or a bulb and even an empty washer bottle I never understand why peeps don't do and check all of the basic stuff before taking the car to MOT.

I've always believed bulbs should be easy to change at the roadside with no tools requi_ed. New cars have got far too complicated

This must be part of the reason why a lot of cars are running around with one or more lights out

Wipers are still easy to change though.

I checked my car beforehand. The wipers seems absolutely fine to me and the bulb has not actually gone, they put it on some kind of test machine and it shows a little bit of white light through the _ed, and apparently that's not ok.

I have no way of knowing that these were problems that would come up.

Sounds like a very fussy tester. I'd go elsewhere next time.

A bit of white light through the _ed?? If it's a white bulbs it's the lens, and could be fixed. If it's a _ed bulb it seems a bit of tape or paint would work...

Smells a rat. However been ages since I had a car mot'd. 3 bikes though.. What a chore!

What type of bulb is it? £7.50 does seem pricy if it is a normal type of bulb. And what car do you drive? Does it have unusually large wiper blades?

I'm from garage

Some new flat wipers can be 20/25 per pair but standard usually 12/13 a pair. Our bulbs vary from 1.00-4.50 fitted

Not all garages are rip offs

If you don't know what it is do Not do it yourself it's a safety link that holds the suspension together!

The place where I went with my vespa for it's mot last year tried to rip me off. Failed on quite a few things and told me it was not economically viable to fix, sent me home with finance quotes for a new scooter.

My husband knows a guy who specialises in vespa and took it to his garage to look at. He said some of the stuff they said was bullshit and didn't need doing. He did all the work that he thought was needed for a hund_ed quid and then sent it back in to be mot'd somewhere else. Passed with not even an advisory.

Lesson learned here, I will never again get another vehicle mot'd at a dealership

i fell into a very similar situation a few year ago....

handed over £45 for new window wiper blades & to have them put on!

(at the time, i hadn't the slightest clue about how much they cost & the guy absolutely talked me into it & made it sound as tho he was doing me a huge deal.. )

lesson well & truly learned!

You sound like your handy with your hands, just google model & make of car (How to Change wiper blade) also (How to Change Bulb i.e brake light) you will always find forums on how to repair, and always someone showing on YouTube.

Very satisfying when you have done the work.

When the car pass the MOT, sit back and enjoy a well deserve glass of wine.

It is a mini and I was having IT service provider servicing stop at a local garage.

I managed to actually ask for discount and got £15 off the total, so going ahead with the work now.

Thank you for everyone's advice
