Price of 2nd hand cars!

Been getting parts at a salvage yard for my car.. And while bolting bits on, thought about a replacement ... A fiesta perhaps .. Had a look and suprised how expensive the buggers are. May have to travel 100s of miles away from home to get a reasonable deal.

you think britaons dear, you should try finding a cheap car in france, about 3 times the price as in the uk and that said, down south they're much more expensive than up north where you are..

looks like you'll have to dig a bit deeper. I know yorkshiremen have short arms and deep pockets.. sounds the same in sunderland

A Spanish exchange student I was working with told me that the price of second hand cars in Spain were really expensive, but insurance was really cheap.

What's "expensive" to you? I've seen plenty of likely reliable sub-£1000 cars around (random example, second gen Micras in varying condition - I had an '02 one bought for under a grand, top spec too with aircon etc, had zero issues). A lot of solid cars going cheap just because they're 10-15 years old.

On the flipside, in the US there's an endurance race anyone can enter with the main rule being the car has to cost $500 or less (£350 or so?) and you see every car under the sun enter (though some of them were that cheap for a reason and blow up hilariously after a couple of laps) - a surprising amount of Camaros, Supras, late-80s-early-90s BMWs, and lots of MX5s (though MX5s are cheap here too, actually!)

So there's your money-saving answer - move to the US

Ooh, while I'm here filling up the thread, I'd advise against anyone looking for a cheap car to buy a used 'luxury'-brand car, sure they might be cheap to buy (thanks, depreciation!) but the parts remain very expensive, often why they're sold in the first place. "Oh it just needs one or two things doing" yeah, one or two things that end up costing more than the car!

When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I had a succession of rubbish cars. They were always breaking down, and because I couldn't afford to have them repaired I had to do it myself, and I hated it.

the first thing I did when I started to earn a good wage, was buy myself a decent car.

travel is worth it, i travelled about 300 miles up north to get my last car, train was a rip off. was about 3k cheaper than what they are around me so was worth it.

hopefully one day china will ship there chinese makes here, then we could buy a brand new one for a small fraction of what they cost here, can buy a brand new one for about 7-10k in china which has all the extras included, they are good value and do actually last have driven a few in china, few friends own them too, no problems.

If you find yourselves a decent sympathetic backstreet type garage, often they will fit second-hand parts, or if you peruse t'interwebby you can find "how to..." tutorials on almost any repair. Great ways to keep costs down.

I did know a backstreet garage, still couldn't afford it.

Sadly, the Internet was about as likely as the starship Enterprise when I was young. Just having a phone was a novelty.

Have a mate who once a year goes to the car auctions in Colchester and just buys a old car with a years Ticket on it for as cheap as he can. Runs it into the ground for the year and then sells it off for parts and scrap and goes and gets another one.

So far it's worked out that he's barely spending a hundred pounds or so a year (excluding fuel) . Most services and MOT's cost more than that combined.

Not the way I'd do things but it's continuing to work out well for him.

The problem is you're looking at fiestas

So is every bugger else

And that keeps the price up for them.

You're better off buying a mazda 2, which is essentially the same car, but without the kudos

They don't sell Chinese cars here because most of them have ripped off western designs and more importantly, they don't comply with European safety regulations

Buy a Saab. No fker wants them any more since GM put the (car) brand into receivership.

I bought a 9 year old one about 18 months ago for just over 2k

Top spec, low mileage, FSH

Only had one issue with it (a burst fuel pipe), sailed through it's MOT and is just as good on petrol as my (much newer) DS3 is.

Slight niggle £280 a year to tax but my insurance actually dropped when I changed over.

After market parts not as hard to get hold of as some would have you believe and still some specialists knocking about for repairs. There are 2 within 5 miles of me for example.

Cars over 10 years old are cheaper to insure and get parts for. EBay is your friend. Also they can't Leave much if you only spend a grand. ThesE days ten year old cars are dead reliable I only bought newer when I was doing 50k a year
