Uprisings across the Middle East have dominated the news over recent weeks, demonstrators are demanding freedom. Some parts of the media and some western leaders have called for change and stated these regions should embrace democracy, our type of democracy. Our version of a free society.

What do these demonstrators mean by freedom, should they aspire to our type of democracy?have we got it right?

Do you feel free?

Yes,we all give up a certain aspect of our freedom as part of the social contract.Compromise is necessary for society to function. So whilst i cannot indulge some of my wilder fantasies,or help myself to things in the shops,i accept that as a realistic rather than ideal world we live in.

In this real world i am free in so much as anyone outside of a one person desert island is.

"

Do you feel free?

"

Im free to vote and as a female Im allowed to access education

Im free to drive even though Im a woman

Im free to choose who I want to marry - or not marry

Im free to choose whether or not I want children

Im free to inherit from my parents

Im free to move around without permission

Im free not to marry my husbands brother if my husband dies

Im free not to give my children dirty water knowing that it may well kill them

Im free to tell David Cameron that I disagree with him without fear of being locked up

Im free to go to a church or a mosque or a synagogue or none at all

So in comparison to others...

I would surmise its intellectual freedom that the Arabs and Persians are after ...and ergo the ability to shape society....

I often wonder if the neo liberalism...rampant consumerism and rugged individualism that prevails in societies that best represent freedom in most eyes isn`t another sort of bondage ....

Feels like I`ve been on a treadmill at times..up early ...work ..an hour or two in the evening with those close to me if I`m lucky and then bed ....exhaustion being my bedfellow ...doesn`t feel very liberating ...

All that glitters ain`t gold ...

Theres times when I feel a real freedom in being able to chose my day ...despite troubles aplenty ....thats a true liberation ...tho I can`t claim I get that right all the time ...
