budgeting loans from dwp

I needed a budgeting loan off the dwp as my fridge freezer and washer both broke almost together. I asked for 250- pound as i was only going to get the items from a second hand local dealer. I received the letter today afta two weeks waiting, and was told i could have the loan. Howeva they then went on to say i would have to pay 29.01 each week to pay back the money leaving me with 61 pound a week to live on. It is too much to pay back each week when ave not a lot left. I think the dwp could have asked for less a week. And i think they are doing this as a deterrent on the people who need it. I wont be accepting it.

They don't take it straight away so it won't hit you for 4-6 months, and when the letter comes saying they are about to start taking repayment you can then appeal it saying your living expenses have changed making g it harder for you to afford that so you can offer X amount.

Not sure if you can do this but maybe call them Monday and tell them you need the money but can't afford the £29 a week ask them if you can reduce the payments X

"Surely if you can do without it, you should. "

No fridge and that means food goes of its a necessary item washing machine similar a launderette may not be an option due to having to travel or it being necessary to wash childrens clothing or other items frequently

There are basic household appliances that are deemed necessary

The dwp are cunts and try every trick and move to tramp on people

I mean do without the loan. It's best to find other ways and cope without borrowing financially if possible.

You can indeed request lower payments but also consider applications to British Gas or Eon...even United Utilities as they offer grants that you don't have to pay back for white goods for people on benefits or low incomes. Good luck

Central

The repayments expectation sounds like too an unrealistic demand. They should offer similar terms to the courts and other services.

It might be worth checking with CAB too, in case they get any offers. They would also help you with dealing with the dwp on the terms.

Good luck!

Why??? What is wrong with getting a job?

Everyone I know, gets up in the morning and leaves home at either 7 am or at 8 am to go to work returning home at either 6 pm or 7 pm. And then they get paid for it!

I work for Social Services. There are some charitable organizations who could help with a grant not a loan. Try turn2us or if you have a disabled child there is also the Family fund. There are several others and many local ones. Try to stay out of debt if possible.

The " get a job " comment was uncalled for. Anybody and I mean anybody can end up in the benefit system.

Accept it anyways hon, why shouldn't you deserve the money. It's only a loan.

But then just DON'T pay off £29 a months, pay of what you can afford. Wait till they get back to you and start a discussion why you can't live on that little, you need to eat etc. And then let them settle for what you say you can pay, they will have to agree to that.

Try your local Facebook groups and places like Freecycle. Much better not to have to borrow money if you don't have to.

Not sure what like it is for elsewhere but single parent families who are low income can go to their local council for white goods. I know a lass who has 2 kids, can't work as no childcare here and she had no washing machine for 3 weeks, had to hand wash stuff and was a local volunteer of a family support company who told her about the council helping with white goods. She got a washing machine that week and they installed it for her too. Perhaps worth looking into.

The E.ON Energy Fund has been set up to help customers of any energy company who are struggling to pay their bills.

The fund can help pay current or final energy bills arrears, from a previous supplier. It can also help customers buy replacement white goods such as cookers, fridges, freezers and washing machines – and also help to replace and repair gas boilers.

You can apply for the fund via an online application form or by phone.

You cant really blame the dwp the just following what the torys said they have to do they have set limits given to them by the government in all aspects of the dwp like how many sanctions they have to give out to people on jsa and things like that since the torys have been in power Britain has had the worst case of children poverty since Victorian times I skaterboi dont work and don't claim jsa I refuse to jump through hoops just to be told sorry not good enough here is a sanction for how ever long the dwp is a joke but only because of the joke we call prime minister. Dont take the money nothing wrong with getting things for free if it keeps you out of debt

The point is if you don't know someone don't judge them. For example, I was in a situation where getting a job wasn't an option, not cos I couldn't but cos I have two disabled parents. Now I could easily have gone to work but that would have meant the government pay out for two carers for my parents full time (with tax payers money of course) because that is what they need. Wasn't it easier and cheaper for me to be a carer (which btw is considerably less money than a carers wage and u only get it for one person at a time, so less tax payers money) rather than employing two other people to do the job?

If u don't know the circumstances don't judge and don't be so rude!!

More importantly OP hasn't stated she is on benefits. She could be working and still apply for this loan because her wages do not cover the extra cost.

Some food for thought...

I don't recall being on benefits was a crime. Yet, almost every time anyone dares to admit to being in receipt of benefits they are treated by some in the forums as if it were.

You can get them to reduce it before they start taking it. I borrowed some a few years back when my husband first moved out and left me in a mess... They wanted to take 46quid out of 90. I got I reduced to 22.

Also local authorities now do have funds that have taken the price of the community care grants.
