When Did Women Take Over?

Derbyshire

Watching the re-runs of the X-files with our daughter, thinking what a good role model Scully is for girls.

In my day, women on tv were either matriarchal bruisers, old maids, or running around in bras and knickers (or if the Sweeney, without the bra) or just generally look pretty, but dippy.

So what's the first good telly role you remember for a woman?

I'm thinking tv detectives like Juliet Bravo, Cagney & Lacey & the brilliant Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect.

"Diana Rigg/ Joanne Lumley in the Avengers ?

"

Ooh good ones.

All the ones I could think of from my youth (Wonder Woman etc) were American, I was trying to think if there was anything British before Juliet Bravo, and whether that itself was linked to having a female pm.

But they're two definite British classics!

Misty on Pokémon, she was a way better trainer than Ash, and had common sense unlike Ash and Brock lol

You called!?

From a child I've always favoured the baddies, evil queen, maleficent, ursula the seawitch!

Back to the op, Diane Youdale aka Jet from gladiators was my idol, had posters of her, would tape gladiators every Saturday and watch them all the time. Was her that made me start kickboxing at age 9 and got to 2nd dan blackbelt.

I think Cheetarah from Thundercats would have the edge over She-Ra in a Catfight.
