When will the UK and USA be happy to vote an atheist as prime minister or president in your opinion? What about our monarch coming out as atheist?

Not in my lifetime. I wouldn't care if a monarch came out as atheist but as defender of the faith it might be difficult.

I think the USA is the really difficult one, such is the power of the evangelical movement there. When I say I'm atheist in the states people seem generally to become uncomfortable, like I've just mentioned pickling babies or worse.

I can imagine we'd accept an atheist PM here within ten years or so, if he was charismatic and morally sound.

And royalty - Charles had suggested defender of faiths, I think. Perhaps defender of faiths and atheism. I guess his son could come out as atheist and we'd accept it. But the people behind the scenes would attempt to suppress disclosure.

It will happen in the uk....at some point in near future. There are many people who are athiest...or believe in secularism...have a liking for a Republic as opposed to a monarchy...it just that its all fragmented...and not being driven...but many believe thats where we will go and have too. Not a chance in the usa tho...

I'm not sure about the U.S.A but in the U.K I remember seeing a news report last year saying that if current trends continue (which I think they will) then there will be more atheists in the U.K than Christians by 2030 so maybe some time around 2030ish for the U.K..

It's not just the evangelical movement in the US. People are just generally more religious there and the one thing polls show is that religious people in the US trust people of other faiths more than they trust people of no faith.

The numbers are getting more favorable for atheists, but I think that's mostly because they couldn't have gotten much worse. You don't have to be overtly religious to be in politics, but you can't be overtly atheistic.

I feel more comfortable being an atheist here. People generally don't care, and it's nice. It's also nice that religion plays a less overt role in politics. But it's also kind of fun to be the antagonist in the US when it comes to religion. The fun wears thin sometimes, though...

I get no trouble until I get to the US and am honest about my position. Seemingly sane folk seem to wobble a bit, even though I don't argue their beliefs to be stupid etc.
