fertility lessons at 11

I think that's a bit young to talk about fertility personally.

Sex education, contraception, safer sex etc definitely

Why burden them with this as well as high school, puberty and all the stress that they endure anyway

It's because kids are growing up very quickly these days (unfortunately) and if schools don't teach them, their mates will.

When I was teaching secondary, and that was almost 20 years ago, there was an 11 year old in my class who was a known drug dealer, and the 13 year olds were having anal sex so they didn't get pregnant.

It's a scary world out there.

I don't mince my words either

But infertility isn't really relevant until you want to start a family surely.

Girls may think, they have to get pregnant young to make sure they have a baby.

I thought the teenage pregnancy rate had gone down, definitely seems to have, I had a baby in September, there were no young mums, they were all my age and even older.

How can you talk about contraception without fertility coming into it? Surely that, and safe sex, is the whole point of contraception?

We are constantly being told that better health and better nutrition are causes of children maturing earlier... Many will actually be "fertile" at such an age so the facts should be made known.

.

What. Can be annoying is that parents expect this to come from schools rather than taking responsibility and actually talking to their own kids?

Was it taught though in the context that some of those children could be from IVF , donor eggs, donor sperm, artificial insemination and other treatments?

I had my periods at 11 - I wasn't too young to understand why I was bleeding, and what that meant my body was doing.

I was capable of getting pregnant - I was taught how not to get pregnant.

Scientific studies are showing that with the rise in good nutrition and medical practices women are getting their periods at younger and younger ages. I was 11 when I got mine, and that was considered young. Apparently the average age for an American girl is now 10.5.

With that comes the responsibility to discuss sex ed in all of its forms, including fertility and infertility. Ironically the US has actually been getting stricter about sex ed in schools, which is quite troublesome, but a different matter entirely.

I actually think 11 is a good age to discuss this stuff.

Our kids have grown up around animals so they are learning this kind of stuff without even knowing they are learning it. Our eldest had a clear understanding of fertility cycles and associated problems way before she started her periods or sex Ed classes, it's just nature and it's natural.

No, I'm all for sex education, my youngest (aside from my baby) is 7...he knows how babies are made, as does my oldest 16, obviously the younger children have it worded slightly differently than when I talk to my teenagers....i just don't think infertility is relevant at such a young age

I asked my 14 year old daughter just this morning while it was being discussed on the tv, did she think fertility was needed to be taught at 11

She says no.

As said above teens are sexually active much younger than lots of people realise and I'm all for as much good information being provided as possible.

I remember watching videos of dogs giving birth and the most creepy of teachers doing sex ed...that was back in the early 90's I'm glad it's changing though. I think kids need to be taught younger, as a country we do have a high rate of teenage pregnancies in the western world.

My 7 year old knew at four that she was ivf..and the complexities of how she was made.

Our cat is pregnant now and the 4/7 yr old know where babies come from. Obv don't know about sex and think its a special cuddle. But all age related I think!

When i was a sexual health worker for nhs girls at 11 were having sex and a girl at 13 had a termination. They need to be taught about these things; esp safe sex.

You think that girls who are starting to menstruate and become fertile are too young to learn about fertility?

Personally I think that every girl should know about fertility before they become fertile.

Of course as you say why burden girls with this when they are going through puberty. Much better to keep them ignorant as it helps keep the teenage pregnancy rates the highest in Europe.

My Own Little World

My 11 yr old daughter came home from school yesterday and told me that they are going to be do Sex Ed this term. She isn't looking forward to it as the other kids will get silly and laugh and mess around.

She has such an old head on her shoulders.

It is a symptom of the modern world.

Nature has been pushed back so far from the lives of children, they need to be taught what we think is just all around us.

I grew up on a farm, had my arm inside a cow roping a breach calf before I was 10, watched facinated as the bull in the bowler hat pulled straws of semen from the liquid nitrogen flask, to impregnate the cows, castrated cows, sheep, pigs, even chickens.

These days pets are infertile or kept in solitary, so access to nature is very limited.

Also education goes on until your 20's then you have to build a nest, find a partner etc. so attempted breeding age is rising from mid 20's to late 30's which means infertility is more of a problem. So it needs explaining in a classroom instead of just knowing it from life.

Maybe you're missing the point? Have you spoken to the teachers about the syllabus? Or done a search on the bbc website? Either may reassure you.

I tend to assume that anything on the syllabus has been so rigorously double-checked that there is a logical reason behind it, and a plan to teach it in an appropriate manner, rather than give too much credence to newspaper scare stories.

It may simply be that fertility is not just linked to age, but also some STIs, so any discussion of contraception/puberty will naturally cover the meaning of 'fertility' too?

The sex education is received was more than adequate when I was at school, but I already knew a great deal anyway. There's no doubt that the way the world is, children need to be taught sex education earlier than maybe previous generations... Id be happy for it to be taught from younger, maybe the syllabus should be throughout all age groups and catered age relevantly...so the older they are the more in depth so its not a thing to laugh about at the back of the classroom and is a normalised lesson rather than a special one.... ?

I think kids need to learn about sex at an early age, and yeh...if it's not in the classroom it's in the playground. I live really close to you OP (so potentially even went to the same school) and my sex ed was poor! So much so that I wasn't aware that being poorly can potentially make the pill ineffective. I was a teenage mum. I'm making damn sure my children know more about it than I ever did. Knowledge is key to making good decisions after all. I don't have an issue with it being taught.

It's true, apparently social media is responsible for a halving of teenage pregnancy. Something to do with the youth of today never actually meeting in person.

My school was known as the whore house on the hill... We can't blame schools for sex education quality or lack thereof. My sex education wasn't predominantly from school abd as I said before, I knew a lot very early on. I was also a teenage mum, not through lack of knowledge either... Just unlucky.

Id like to think my children are all well informed about sex, safer sex and contraception.

When I was teaching secondary, and that was almost 20 years ago, there was an 11 year old in my class who was a known drug dealer, and the 13 year olds were having anal sex so they didn't get pregnant.

It's a scary world out there.

Holy shit, never knew what anal sex was when I was a kid!! A hairy fanny was statutory too! I think kids need to learn about sex at an early age, and yeh...if it's not in the classroom it's in the playground. Shocking about the anal sex at such an early age but in many ways it's a sensible approach to avoid pregnancy, can't imagine where kids would obtain protection without questions being asked!! Clever little shits!!

It's easy to obtain protection. You either go into a chemist and buy condoms, or you buy them on the internet.

There is no age limit (sensibly) on buying condoms.

I think I had anal sex before I was legally old enough to. Not for any particular reason other than I'd heard it felt good.

There are so many places to get condoms, I was recently at my local family center for baby massage... They had condoms in bowls so I grabbed a handful for my daughter... As a teenager, I went to the brook in Liverpool and was given bags of them.

As for anal... My 16 year old has tried it, it hurt, she didn't like it.... We have an open enough relationship to talk about anything, like my sex box and butt plugs

I know condoms are readily available but if anot 11 yr old went into a chemist asking for condoms I don't think they'd have much luck...and they'd need a debit card to purchase them online...that's my point.

If the sales person didn't sell them the condoms because of some ethical stance, then I'd hold them personally responsible if that child then got pregnant or caught an STI because they couldn't get their hands on protection.

But at 11 yrs old...really?? Jesus!!! I'd be phoning the parents and asking questions."

Does the sales assistant in your local Superdrug know every kids parents in your 100,000 population town?

A world of my own

Sex education in schools is absolutely shocking and in my mind years behind where it should be.

Yes we should talk about fertility. They should be told about so many things that seem to be ignored.

For instance. Sexualitiy and gender, identity. Even body awareness and the way that even little ones body shame.

Having a token lesbian couple in the school video isn't really enough.

There are many kids at 10 and 11 if not younger who may be unsure of where they 'fit' they get bullied or feel isolated. All because they are figuring themselves out and it may not be the same as those around them. Of course it should be talked about. They should learn it's not just them. Maybe schools aren't the best place for it but they need to give something.

I also think there's a big issue in schools being afraid they offend patents. Parents who are too single minded to have frank discussions with their children when they really should.

Condoms are on the shelf in most supermarkets who also have self service tills. As well as being readily available for free. Also when my children were teenagers there was a "don't ask" box in the bathroom cabinet which got replaced if it got empty. Neither of my children got pregnant, so something worked.

Bottom line is although unplanned pregnancy does happen, the information and equipment is out there to prevent it, but nothing is done to explain you need to plan having children before you are 50. so there is a gap in the education that is being closed.

yep that's a fantasitic idea and the kids who are sensible enough to use condoms get a bollocking from their parents so next time they have sex they don't buy them and risk pregnancy or a sti because you dobbed them in for being sensible

There a clinic called the brook that's only deals with young people you can go at any age and get birth control without your parents permission, not all young kids can speak to their parents about such things and if a girls sexually active at 12/13 surely it's better to have somewhere for her to go to get birth control and professional advice without the risk of her parents knowing than risk getting pregnant

Im pretty confused by your total opposite reactions ... You think its innapropriate to provide EDUCATION to a child on fertility ... Which is biology and will happen to that child wether discussed or not

But its totally acceptable to discuss your personal kinks with your 16year old daughter who should really just be starting to learn and expiriment for herself ... I think that goes a bit beyond the educational requirement

Do you also discuss your swinging lifestyle when she is at an age where she should be learning about building relationships?

Im all for open and frank discussion ... Wish my parents had been more like that ... But it soubds like you have the balance here totally backwards

Strikes me as common sense; alongside all the other biology and reproductive lessons in school, making clear to both boys and girls the choices and consequences that arise from fertility. 11 seems like a sensible age to me - perhaps yours is a moral judgement?

Swinging isn't separate to building relationships. Many of us build relationships through swinging. It would be better to teach young people that monogamy isn't necessary or required, and that there are other options for them in life.

In reference to the OP I dont see why you should ring fence certain areas of sex as not being necessary. I will sit down with each of my children and discuss the morals and ethics associated with sex. I wont pull any punches or sugar coat it. Fertility and infertility will come into it

No, I'm not saying don't educate them I'm saying at 11 is it necessary to learn about FERTILITY. the whole discussion on the tv was about teaching 11 years, about not leaving it too late to have a child... At 11... It's not what you need to be thinking about.

My daughter came to me, asking about anal, should it hurt etc that's because she can talk to me not because I've said to her "know what, I love being fucked up the arse"... Then came the discussion about me liking anal sex, having sex toys etc. Not discussed swinging with her as its my lifestyle not hers, if she came to me in the future to talk about it, THEN I'd tell her.

If a child cant come to their parent about something, then that says more about the parent than child. I might not have it right, but it works for MY family

In that classroom though - you're learning about sex ! But during the infertility section - some are sat there who are from infertility treatment and by 11 they most likely know that. So the teacher is giving them the space and platform to understand it more and think oh - I'm not the only one and so on.

Plus - not all parents are open to discuss these issues so at least it's a consistent message. Perhaps coupled with - certain STI's cause infertility.
